Eggs really GROW!

Had one of those "perfect timing" moments this morning, when my bloodred female laid a second clutch of 6 eggs. She laid her first clutch of 14 eggs on 5/1, 68 days ago, which means they should be pipping any day now. Anyway, I thought it might be interesting (especially for newbies) to show the difference in egg size at laying and egg size at hatching. The new eggs (on the left) average about 8.6 grams each; the about-to-hatch eggs (which aren't much longer than the new ones, if any) average about 24 grams each.

Oh, I meant to mention (for newbies' sake) that the eggs on the right, the ones about to hatch, are discolored/stained from being in damp sphagnum moss for the past two months. They were originally as bright white as the newly laid eggs on the left. Although the staining makes the eggs sorta look like they're going bad, it actually does not damage them.
