Is it necessary for a dog to wear shoes?
I have seen a couple of muttluks all over the internet and I am wondering if my Golden Retriever needed a pair whenever we go hiking to protect his paws.

If the ground is going to be very hot or very cold, then yes, I would use dog shoes. If the places you hike have lots of burrs or sharp rocks, then that might be a good idea. Most of the time dog pads can handle the terrain just fine and if you haven't acclimated your dog to wearing shoes, they may freak out a little the first time you put them on.
