Scared of branch / decoration?

My corn is a real climber so during a shop for mice from the local reptile store I decided to get a branch for him to climb on.

It's a root, not unlike this one

However ever since it's been in he's been a whole 180 on his usual behaviour. Hiding away, burying, and being very timid when I'm nearby or in the vivarium. I'm starting to wonder if he is afraid of the branch as he's glued himself to the opposite side to it.
