New motor for my vette...

Just browsing other sections of the site and came upon this. It has been a month now since you got the notice of shipment of the transmission.

Surely you have it finished and are driving it now??!

No, the saga is still not over. The latest thing is that the original guy put on valve covers that were too flimsy and they are leaking. They can't be tightened down enough without bowing the metal because the metal is too thin. So I had to order another (quality) set, which since they are custom TALL ones to clear the Jesel rocker arms, will take about two weeks to get.

After all this, I have learned that if you smack yourself in the head long enough and hard enough, you really DO go numb....

On a related front, I talked to an investigator with the local Sheriff's department today and he told me that there is now a CRIMINAL investigation taking place on the guy (Chris Harwood) who was originally working on my car and defrauded me of various items and services. This is through BOTH the sheriff's department and the Division of Consumer Services for the State of Florida.

I do wish the car is finished in time for the texas mile this year, I think you can break 200mph if you run race fuel and an aggressive tune.

I've been thinking the car will never be done. One thing after another will crop up. Waiting for new valve covers to show up this week. Come to find out those suckers are made in Australia. Sheesh... Isn't anything made in the USA any longer?

I can't believe it has been over 14 MONTHS since I took my car in to be worked on.

As for breaking 200 mph with the car, I believe there is a speed limiter programmed in at right around 175 mph. Without additional spoilers and such, I believe the front end tends to lift up on these cars right around 200 mph or so. Plus I don't believe the tires I have are rated for that speed. Could be quite exciting to have a tire blowout at 200 mph, I would imagine....

I mentioned the latest in another thread, so I guess I might as well bring this thread up to date.

In a nutshell, NOT good....

Since having it towed from the first guy working on it (who wound up putting old parts back in and charging me for new), the turbos have had to be replaced, many of the things the first guy said he did either weren't done or were done in a slipshod manner, had to replace the valve covers, have the engine pulled out again right now to replace the oil pan gasket bolts that were a bit too long and causing an oil leak, and an apparent head gasket blowout. When the heads were pulled they found that a washer or something had been dropped into one of the cylinders that caused some piston damage, requiring it to be replaced.

Been over 17 months now since I first took it into the shop to have work started....

Any light at the end of the tunnel? Well seems every time I THINK there is, it's a light taped to the end of a two-by-four swinging at my head.

But I guess it's not ALL bad. A while back Connie got to worrying about me being depressed about all this for so long and did some MAJOR arm twisting to talk me into buying something else. It meant raping the retirement fund to do so, but the way she put it, we're not going to live forever, and neither am I going to be physicall able to drive a stick shift forever, so let's enjoy life while we can. So here's what we came up with to pull me out of the doldrums....

My arm STILL hurts from where Connie twisted it, I'll have you know..... :roflmao:

BTW, I don't know if anyone would be interested in reading this entire sordid mess from beginning to end, but here it is in two parts:

Man sounds like you have been to hell and back over that vette :(

You know what they say about project cars though, they are never finished, usually though its not fixing other peoples mistakes.

Yeah, I'm about to the point where I just want it running so I can drive it somewhere and slap a FOR SALE sign on the damned thing. I'm sure I would get a better price for it running than I would if I had to tow it there.

IF it ever gets done, I'll just have to see how many bad memories are now associated with it. I know the last few times I saw it on the lift I felt kind of nauseous. Seeing the engine out again was definitely an unpleasant experience.

Ya I can imagine it would be hard to enjoy something that has caused so much pain and grief. SOOO when your done you can ship it up to me hahahaha :grin01:

All joking aside sorry to hear its been such a pain in the butt. I have had cars like that where they were nothing but problems, I wanted to take my guns to a few of em. :twoguns: :madeuce:

I haven't ruled that out neither. Fifty caliber API and incendiary rounds would probably make a mess of that blue plastic body...... :grin01:

Haha

Last summer we went out for a big shoot out. A buddy brought his 2 lb Black powder cannon and his brother donated a 94 Explorer. Needless to say, that thing was a "holy SUV" when we were done with it hahah. It was shot with every thing from a .22lr up to a 12 guage up to a .300 win mag and of course the Cannon haha. It was fun.

I would have a hard time though doing that to a Corvette lol.

Not to high jack this thread but do you have a Barrett 82A1? If so how do you like it?

Well, actually I recently sold it. Matter of fact, I shipped it out to the buyer just yesterday. Haven't shot it for many years now. Bought it back in 1997 and it's spent most of it's life sitting in a vault.

It was fun to shoot, but it does wear you out pretty quickly. I honestly never put more than two rounds in the magazine anyway, as rapid firing this gun to empty a full magazine is just not something I wanted to try. The gun is BIG and HEAVY and quite honestly at this stage of my life (age) not any fun to try to lug around. Accuracy is not all that great because of the recoiling barrel assembly, so figure on 2 MOA at best.

Recoil is something you have to be aware of all the time when shooting one of these things. The muzzle brake helps a LOT, but it is still there. Feels like a big shove on your shoulder pushing you back about 4 inches. You HAVE to keep your face welded to the stock of the gun unless you want the back end of the scope imprinting above your right eye. A scope with substantial eye relief is a MUST.

I actually liked shooting the model 99 a whole lot more than the M82A1, even though it is a single shot rifle. And I also have a model 95 that I have never fired yet. So it's not like I got rid of all my .50BMG shooting arsenal... :grin01:

Here's some old pics when I had the "family" all together. From front to back it's the model 95, model 99, and model M82A1.
