corn snake enclosure questions

First let me say: This is my first post and I am happy to see there is a forum dedicated to corn snakes!

My questions:

1. I am wondering about the materials that I will be using to build my custom snake enclosure. This is going to be a living-room quality piece of furniture so it must look nice. Are there any woods to avoid? Are there any other materials to avoid? And yes I know the "don't bring a stick in from outside, or use a stinky old shoe as a house" kind of stuff

2. How much ventilation does a full sized corn (or two corns maybe, or maybe a ball python, or w/e will eventually end up in this tank) need? I have seen tanks that range from one or two hockey puck sized wholes, all the way up to the entire thing being mesh.

Thanks a lot snake lovers!
