I could imagine it being possibly tied to the gene. It would be interesting to see if there was a pattern to the presence of the bug-eye. Is it seen more often in individuals that lack or have smaller melanin deposits on the face? Melanin is not just used in pigment, it plays vital roles in development in many different area.
