Mine hides most of the time, but comes out around dusk. If it's been at least 4 or 5 days since I fed her, sometimes she'll peek out of her hide when I come into the room. I just take her out of the hide for handling and she seems fine with that.
Like others said, it depends a lot on the particular snake.
I've read reviews of a book called "The Art of Keeping Snakes", or something like that, which say that the author recommends a few species which don't hide too much, but I've never tracked down what they are. Guess I should buy the book.
