When I lived in Maryland, I used to service the computers in a section of Baltimore Gas & Electric. I mentioned this thing about running underground wires there too, and the manager I was looking at told me why they would never do that. Apparently a LOT of upper brass for the electric companies own major stock holdings in the companies that provide the poles. So it is actually money in their pockets to keep the poles and have them replaced periodically and through weather mishaps.

This sort of thing is what really makes the world go around, I suppose.

I think our brass also holds the stock, as now they figured the pole spacing was too far apart, and are putting poles between the existing poles. I may have to do a little research on pole companies and their stocks.
