Thermostat Probe Question

Hello guys, I've been reading up on cornsnake care off and on for the past 10 years but I am now in a position to finally get a cornsnake. My corn is arriving on Friday but I am getting a head start on setting up the enclosure and making sure everything is in working order.

I have everything pretty much good to go, except for the thermostat. So originally I had the probe just below the bedding but it was reading way too low and the actual floor was reading about 90. So I moved the prob to the floor of the enclosure and now it's reading way too high and the top of the bedding is only reading about 77-80, even though I bumped the set temp up to 90. I am wondering if there is a happy medium.

Thank you.

A lot of us tape the probe to the pad underneath the glass. Then set the temp on the thermostat to whatever temp it takes to give you a reading of about 83 to 87 degrees inside the "warm hide." You're never going to be able to heat a large area or the entire cage with a reptile heat pad, they are not designed for that. They are designed to heat "a spot" in this case, the spot directly over the heat pad. You warm side Hide should be directly above it.

For a point of reference, I have to set my thermostat to 91 in the summer and about 95 in the winter to maintain a temp of 85 inside the warm hide. What it measure in the rest of the cage doesn't matter.

Wow, such an exciting time getting your first snake!!
I set my temps so that the floor of the cage, under the bedding, is the correct temperature. Most of the time the snakes burrow under the substrate anyway and end up sitting on the bare cage bottom, so that is where I want the right temperature to be. Then again, I use the larger aspen shavings which aren't quite as nice as the really finely shredded stuff. I think when I used to use that it didn't move out from underneath them quite as easily, so you may have to tweak your temperatures once you find out how your particular snake likes to rest. On top of the bedding, or burrowed down into it. And I agree with Karl, it's been way easier getting my temperatures consistent since I started putting the probe actually between the heat tape/mat and the cage bottom.

Congratulations, and good luck with your first snake!!!

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I have it sorted out for the preliminary gradient and I’ll wait to see what my snake prefers before making the final tweaks.
