'09 corn

A fellow teacher met me in the hall before school. It seems his son was sweeping the porch and found an adorable baby corn! He handed me a coffee can with this little cutie inside. It's quite a gentle little thing, and has some lovely colors. Here are a couple of quick pictures. They're not the greatest, but I don't want to pester the baby too much until s/he's had more of a chance to settle in.

I've name it Chess in honor of the Chesser family who found it. I just love the speckles and dots on its head! It will be a school snake for at while, at least. If it's female may hang onto it for the longer term. If it's male, it'll be released near where it was found. Thanks for looking.

Aaaaah, you lucky duck. I wish I lived further south so I could find some of those. We've got some nice big black rats right outside the city though..

Very cute!! I'm so glad I don't find them ever, even though I know they are there. I'd have a hard time putting them back.

What a little cute snake-y! I'd have a very hard time letting it go ever.

I've been fortunate enough to find & observe our beautiful wild native adult corns from time to time. This is the first time anyone's handed me a little one! I generally leave wildlife alone to be wild, though I've been known to relocate them from a subdivision to less populated areas. I love it when I can really show my students that these animals are gentle, beneficial, harmless members of our local ecosystem.

That said, if Chess is a female I may well keep her. She's in quarantine now, of course. She seems healthy and I'll try feeding her this weekend. I've had her for 3 days and she behaves like any other yearling. I know the viv must seem small after the great outdoors, but it does have the benefit of no predators lurking about!

That is awesome. I wish I would have took pictures of the ones I used to get around my place when I was a kid... Unfortunately we called them chicken snakes and my father killed the ones that were seen eating the eggs....

I don't think my dad ever killed a snake in the barn. He always said they were great for keeping down the mice and rats, and of course he was right. I don't know what he'd have done if he actually found one eating eggs, though.

Chess ate a f/t mouse Friday evening, just as if that's what it's always eaten. Pretty cool!
