So just out of curiosity, Rich, but are you going to keep any pet snakes once you've retired? Or are you literally, 100% getting out of snakes?

Any chance you are going to sell off some of those hatchling water bowls at Daytona?

Hmm, well could be.... I won't really be needing them for next year, now will I? I'll see if I have any laying around that we can clean up to bring with us. And honestly, after the show, as long as you don't mind they are used, I could sell what I have there that came out of the deli cups from animals we sold. All you need to do is soak them in bleach for a bit to clean them up.
I guess when I get retired, I'll have to clean a path to the milling machine and start making some more of them. That will give me something to do when I get bored............

100 percent gettting out of them. Probably won't have ANY live animals as pets, at least for a while. They have tied us down for so long, that we just want to be free of them so we can travel without needing someone to take care of that stuff while we are gone. Even ONE animal will need that done.
Really, if I could get Connie interested, I wouldn't mind getting a motor home and just head out for parts unknown, no forwarding address, no itinerary, and no estimated time to return. Guess I would have to prepay all the utility bills, though, and anything else that would need to be paid while we are gone. Hell, if property values every go back up again, we could sell our 50 acres here and just become gypsies.....

Yeah, the squirrels have taken FULL advantage of the fact that I am usually busy breeding the animals right when the fresh bamboo shoots come up, and they can tear them up with impunity. Plus they know my weakness. They get up early to do their dirty deeds, and I am just NOT a morning person. But that may change...
Heck this past year I actually went and bought some heavy duty grade pepper spray to spray on the shoots to try to keep the squirrels at bay. I think it worked somewhat, but each rain we had tended to wash it off of the shoots. But I do think it helped. Tell you what, that crap is NASTY! I just caught the barest whiff of it and it about laid me out. Couldn't breath, couldn't see, and felt like my throad had closed up. NO WAY I'd want to catch a full dose of that stuff right in the face. If it didn't KILL me, I'd be damned surprised... Anyway, I remembered I had bought a gas mask a long while back (don't ask...) so I figured I would try that out the next time I sprayed the bamboo groves. Heck that worked like a charm... But honestly, I was scared to death when I was using it. I had to wear protection all over the rest of my body, because the pepper spray burns like hell when it hits bare skin. Like I said, NASTY stuff! So here I am all covered up and wearing this gas mask, spraying the evil red mist through the woods. Had a local hunter been passing through out propery and seen me, sure as hell I would have been shot as an alien or something, and been stuffed and mounted on the wall of his trailer as his most prized trophy. I'm sure I had to have looked quite the part of something NOBODY around here has ever seen before.
Anyway, next season, I'll be able to set up shop with some sort of blind and a rifle to stand guard over the bamboo grove those pests seem to like the best. Of course, it is the grove of my largest bamboo they like the best to destroy...
Ah.... retirement........

I like the idea of a motor home, cruising the open road with no ties. Of course seeing the empty reptile room will ignite emotions and memories, but you know that retirement is the best decision to make at this point. Don't be the Brett Favre of Corn Snake Breeding, go out on top, enjoy a life of freedom, and don't look back.
I look back at the past house we rented before we bought our house, and it still stirs up memories and emotions. I would love to live a day like things were there, it has a special place in my heart. But I know that I don't really miss it, and could not go back to that way of life. Borrowing water from neighbors, sharing a tiny mobile home with my mother and brother, and a bathroom without a door or working sink.
Keep the fond memories close to your heart, but don't build up resentment for the business you once loved over working yourself. You'll love the retired life, and have earned a break.

Actually it's been a couple of months since I've seen them myself. Not had much time since the babies began hatching out..... Plus the mosquitos have been pretty fierce up till pretty recently. Been getting a LOT of rain around here, which is good for the bamboo, but also good for the mosquitos.
But would make a nice video, I think..... I should have PLENTY of time for stuff like this in just another couple of months.
