lay box question

2manysnakes

I smell a rat
Ok, so I now have at least 8 gravid snakes. I have lay boxes made for them all out of the largest size ziploc containers. Problem is they are see through, and so I covered the outside with tape to give them some privacy. My question is, do I need to black out the lids as well? They are blue, but still see through. I just want to make sure I have the best set up possible for these girls. Thanks everyone, what would I do without you all? :crazy02:.

No don't black out the lids and take the tape off, much to easy for your snake to get caught in the tape. I have seen my friends lay boxes they are clear and you want that so you can hopefully see eggs through the sides. My first box was blue plastic I couldn't see what she was doing without taking off the lid, this is very disturbing to the snake. Just make sur each female had her own viv her own lay box lots of clean water to drink. Keep the moss moist but ot wet. Put a big hole in the box lid or side but also a few small ones on the top. This wasy you can spray the lid and water will trickle down to her. susan

Wow, thanks. I really thought they needed to be blacked out. I will take off the tape, but the way I did it, I really don't think the snakes could get wrapped up in it. Thanks again.

Great explanation Susan. We do the same things as well. The snake really doesn't need it dark. The main purpose of the bin is to give her a nice humid place to lay her clutch.

As Susan and Jay said, the clear is actually best.

If the snakes are in a high traffic or extra bright area though, and you are worried about them being disturbed, you can always through a pillow case or other light fabric over their cages. We do this for ours and it gives them enough privacy and we can just peek inside and see through the clear plastic lay boxes to tell if they have dropped eggs without having to disturb them.

Believe this if there is one millionth of a loose piece of tape and your snake will find. They are tricky little devils and great escape artists.

2many - for my snake that just laid, the tub was totally clear. She didnt seem to mind at all, and as everyone said, it's a lot easier to keep tabs on them without bothering her too much.

Glad the laying went well!

Snakes don't seem to notice if stuff is clear:
