Some Greater Cleveland Area Amphibians from Tonight

With temperatures hitting 70 yesterday and it being in the 50s with a lot of rain today, I decided to check things out. It was a downpour most of the night.

Spring Peepers were all over the place.

It wasn't long before Spotted Salamanders started turning up as well.

And there were a surprisingly large number of Green Frogs out and about.

This might be the coolest Spotted Salamander I've ever seen.

As a matter of fact, I think I need to see another picture of it.

A pink Wood Frog.

This was the only Smallmouth type-thing I saw - they are not as common as Spotted Salamanders in this area.

Soon it got late and I was ready to start heading home. But wait, what's that over by the side of the road?

Yeah, that's right - there's no time like toad time.

Nice finds! I'm hoping to get out Friday...it has dropped back down in the 30's until then.

I used to love listening to the peepers at night at my grandma's house while falling asleep. Nice finds!

Salamanders are so rare now in our area, I'll go out and find a few garter snakes and northern banded water snakes and tons of grass frogs, leopard frogs, and bullfrogs but thats about it, oh and occasionaly I get close enough to get some shots and hands on experience with some red eared sliders or snapping turtles.

I'm not seeing the number of native snake species that I used to either in the past few years. No black rats, racers, or bull snakes. Midland browns and ringnecks have all but disappeared as well, it's rather upsetting.
