Hmmm I know its not a good idea to keep 2 animals of complete opposites live in the same space but some how I have ended up with 2 kittens and 2 corn snakes
At first I was scared of the snakes but now I'm getting used to thier personalities I'm growing quite attached!
The little snake pinky is sweet but managed to climb to the top of the enclosure and escape from the light hole that unattached when moving in to my room.
I woke up at 2 am with the cats looking over n hissing at each other. My cats are pretty good n have been scared since the snakes moved in (and also don't like sharing my attention) but left the room immediately when I realised what was going on - seemed the little guy was quite proud of him self and let me catch him as both are more social and out going in my room then in previous rooms and carers, and actually don't just hang out in the skull all the time. He wanted to play but I was so freaked out I just out him back in.

Pinky and the brain....but pinky HAS been super adventures and not so innocent and stupid! now crawls up to the heat lamp and hangs out up top, I'm keen to give them a good home and currently redesigning thir enclosure, with ropes, plants and fun stuff- but is it silly to have 2 cats and 2 snakes in the same space??? My flat mates are not happy... But snakes are like the cats and live a very long time.....and only take up a little space. I don't think I have had a flatmate for more then 3yrs straight?? Any suggestions??? Should I be looking to find them a new home or can cats and snakes live happy together??what happens if 1 of them escapes again?? Is it unfair on both animals?

I have five cats and twenty snakes. Just keep the cages secure and you won't have an issue... you're lucky they didn't kill the snakes. My cats are notorious snake killers.

Wow that's quite a lot of snakes!!! I actually had a phobia that I'm trying to overcome hence being gordian of pinky and the brain...I'm really not sure how long it had all been going on for, think it was more curiosity!! but both did not seem that aggressive or distressed.
Thanks for the confidence I really Wang to keep them is convincing the house otherwise....

Can you keep the snakes in a room that can be shut away from the cats, simply so that if Pinky makes another break for it, he'll probably find a hiding place away from them?

I have two 10 yr old rescued cats who consider the frog tank their private television set, but they pretty much ignore Wadjet. I don't know if a 3 1/2+ foot long snake is simply too big to seem like good prey, or if she doesn't move enough to interest them, while if they tap the glass on the frog terrarium someone is going to jump. I make sure that if I'm doing a water change or feeding for the frogs, I have the door CLOSED so that if one makes a break for it, I have a chance to retrieve him before the cats do!

My cat use to be VERY curious of my 2 snakes, and occassionally the Gecko. The worse he ever did was sit his fat butt on the screen lid to look in. That was only when I left the door open to the room the tanks were in. That was when I first got them. Now he doesn't pay much attention since he figures he can't get to them. All the tanks have lid locks so the snakes can't get out!

I have lots and lots of animals that are emphatically not compatible with one another. But it is my responsibility to make sure they can never escape their enclosures or come in physical contact with one another.

As long as you never have the snakes out of their tanks with a cat in the room, you'll be fine. If there's no risk of interaction then it's OK. However, escapes are a different matter.

My cat was fascinated by the snakes - not spooked or anxious at all. The problem being that she would've loved to "play" with them in the same way that she would've "played" with a mouse. The way the snakes moved, seemed to fascinate her. I couldn't risk her ever getting near them as she could move really fast. Even if I'd been holding a snake, I couldn't have saved it from a jump + claw swipe.

If a hatchling escapes and finds itself near a cat, the likelihood is that it will be killed. You were very lucky. One of the first priorities of a snake tank is that it should be escape-proof. If you can sort that aspect out (and prevent the cats from jumping/sitting on the screen lid if it has one) then this aspect will be taken care of.

2 cats, 3 dogs. when i take my snake out to handle her/feed her i do put the dogs away only because the youngest is really nosy and just HAS to get in my business and see what i'm doing because "she is super cool and wow and can i can i can i"?. curiosity really, they would never intentionally hurt her (i do realize they are dogs and things can happen). same with my dragons...just HAS to see whats going on. my cats like to watch "cat tv", when the dragons are active or the snake is exploring, but can't get ontop of vivs. my cats pretty much know to stay away when i'm dealing with the reptiles.

hiya, we have lots of.. 22 snakes, 1 cat, and other beasties BUT

the cat, Billy, HAS to be there with whichever snake we have out. OR, IF we are in our rep room, he's there calling.. meoooow.. I am here Mum, lol he nuzzles in to get a sniff a quick lick to whatever we have hold of, lies down and is quite at ease with them all!!

For the most part our cat's don't even know our corn exists, they get jealous and like to investigate her when she's feeding but that's about it for the most part. Our male cat really likes her though and she'll sniff him in which case he gives a loud meow rolls over onto his back and start squirming around in a purring fit. He's always been a little weird though...

I have 2 old cats and 2 kittens with around 20 snakes. The kittens are curious about the snakes but seem to do alright with leaving them alone! I give them lots of toys.

Can you keep the snakes in your room? I see you have flat mates.. be easier that way then they are not in their view... so it speak!

WHO'S house is it?

The cats should be fine with them as long as you teach them . so if they go to the vivariums.. that they know... "NO don't" "come away" they soon learn!

How has it gone oh by the way you do have the snakes housed separately !?

This question scared me at first because I already have 4 cats that are going nowhere, so if I had to make a choice, that would have sucked.

We now have another cat, young one 8-9 Months ish, He is soooo funny with the snakes, he was a stray cat so, I am sure he's been in contact with wiggly things outside...

What he does is, lie down next to me, watches, and when I see the bum starting to wiggle i tell him , easy Golly lol it's ok, then he wanders off. Funny wee fella he is!

The snakes don't roam i=on the floor by the way, this is when they have snakey cuddles!

Happy New Year by the way!!

I mentioned the 3 snakes and 2 cats, well I also have an African Grey Parrot, 2 cockatiels and a dog. They all get along and live together in my home.

In our house {and none are shut away from the others} we have a dog, three cats, 2 guinea pigs and 5 snakes. Everybody co-exists peacefully, for the most part, sometimes the cats will pick on the dog though lol. As far as the snakes, I let the cats sniff/check out the new viv and then that's enough. After that first time checking it out, I tell them to "Git!" and they know to go away from it. The only time I have to lock any of them up is when defrosting mice, my calico likes to steal them and run off. Once in a while one of the cats will get fascinated by one of the corns exploring their viv, but I shoo them away. They know the vivs are off limits but I am very diligent in that regard. I have to be diligent with the mini zoo we have. I've even somehow managed to get one of my dog-hating horses to tolerate the dog going out in her area.

I have all the caged critters in my livingroom and my cats roam freely. They have never even noticed the snake, they lay on top of the tortoise cage for heat and on top of the guinea pig cage if it is by a window. They ignore all the other critters. My big Tom ignores all the animals basically, he doesn't care as long as they let him sleep. Heck when he found us and adopted us I had 2 foster puppies and one of the puppies and this Tom were best buds. He is just a mellow cat (though the neighbors say he is mean to their cat, hissing at it when it tries to go outside) The kitten is more curious. The other day he learned how to open the guinea pig cage, I found him inside, front paws wrapped around the guinea pig licking it. Not sure if he was tasting for later or grooming it but I had him out of there too quickly to find out. All in all though all my furry animals learn to leave the rest alone.
