-Abusive towards other members (1 pt.)
-Inappropriate advertising (1 pt.)
-Profanity (2 pts.)
-Antagonism toward moderators (4 pts.)
-Racist/Prejudicial remarks (4 pts.)
-Actual or implied threats (5 pts.)

Cumulative penalties:

10 pts.: Immediate 3-day ban
20 pts.: 1-month ban
30 pts.: Permanent ban
30 pts. (Spamming): Immediate permanent ban

Just wondering... after some time (of good behavior) are the points drop or do you have them for life???
 
1. I really don't know when the points drop off. But the mods aren't restricted to the system, so if a member creates enough difficulty, they'll probably be booted anyway. I don't advise testing it.

2. I can see infractions in user profiles, but I don't know if you can. Responsible members won't need to worry.
 
When I got mine, twice x 2pts = 4 total for profanity, I think Susan said they lasted for a year. (Implied, but clearly implied profanity.) There is an "Infractions" tab on my Profile page. I can see them. I just assumed everyone else could, too.
They are also just above my rep points on my "User CP" page.
By the way, that was back in March and April, when I was still pretty new. It hurt and was embarrassing, but I deserved them. I learned to behave more appropriately. This is the first and only forum I have ever been in, so I have been clumsier than most in learning forum etiquette.
 
Does using punctuation characters instead of letters count as profanity? I don't want to run afoul of that rule unintentionally & prefer to do something like t&^s rather than spell out the work.

Yes, implied profanity counts. But like many of the rules, enforcement can be subjective. The admin/mod team doesn't work by committee.

This presents another point. Don't expect consistency in enforcement of site rules. Susan and I are not required to deal with all potential problems in the same way. If you run afoul of her in an area that I seemed to be tolerant, tough feces. And vice versa, of course.

Yes it does. That is what I got one of my infractions for. I have seen it ignored many times (the use of symbols for obvious letters),...but mine was used in a heated inflammatory sense, so I think I earned that infraction fair and square.

There's a date next to them as well that tells you when your time is up for infractions...
I also see mine in the User CP section ...
I got mine for making a witty comment, no profanity or anything....
It says abusive to another member.... Which on reflection, it was... I still think it was funny though...... But I won't be doing it again... LOL

Just remember that if the implied profanity is a racial slur used to antagonize a moderator in a threatening way, those points could add up quickly! ;)

Racial slurs are not my thing. I prefer to be very specific about my insults. Race isn't specific, and I know too many good people of too many different color morphs to associate badness with color morph in humans.

Threats aren't my thing either. If I am not going to act on them, why bother? If I am going to act, why warn the turkey first? Besides, I can't think of anything that could happen on a forum that's worth threats let alone acting on such.

Nah, my profanity is likely to be of the "Goldarn the normal hateling bit me again & the one pippie I really wanted died!" flavor.

Can you clarify which words are considered profane?

I mean, there are words that I would consider profane, if my children said them (my children are ten and seven), but aren't considered profane by the layman. There are words that are not considered profane by the FCC. Then there is the context that they are used in. :confused:

This is the definition put forth by the FCC:
The FCC has defined profanity as “including language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance.”

As I recall, this was discussed at length on a previous occasion. In the end, I believe that it was decided that any words that were put on the list by the late, great George Carlin probably should NOT be used on this site.

Another suggestion was that if you stop and think "Should I post this or could it be considered profane?" then you probably should not post it either.
 
I'm not Deano but I gots two cents to spend.

Profanity is sort of like porn. "Can't define it, but we know it when we see it". Asking for an exhaustive list or definition of profanity is just begging to have someone (not you at all Wayne, I have the highest regard for you) find an exception or a word not on the list. I remember there was one particularly unpleasant person on another forum who managed to find some derogatory wording in another language, she didn't get away with it although it took some effort to translate.

Common sense goes a long way. If one gets dinged for profanity (and I have, several times) it's a learning experience. I manage to be pretty clean most of the time, and if a mod judges I've got dirt I usually thank them and get better for a while. There ARE words that aren't really dirt, but to me, it's more important to respect the system. If Deano sez it's a cuss, it's a cuss, and considering Deano is not exactly any kind of angel, if he sez it's a cuss it prolly is.

Again Wayne, you have a good point, just want to have my little two cents here.

That FCC definition works for me, but notice how they use the word "includes." Even they don't limit their definition narrowly. It's too subjective. The mods aren't in full agreement, and we're probably never going to be. Gray areas abound. I wish I could be more specific, but I can't. :shrugs:

That's a good point and suggestion, but what I may consider as profane, may be and is probably different than what you, Deano, Rich, Susan, etc, consider as profane. So who has the final word on that?

Example: I can see the word the word that begins with an "A" and rhymes with glass, be considered as profanity, if I called you one, but what if I am referring to a mule, pain or my rather large body part? Then what? :confused:

My take on other forums is that if you are referring to a female canid in a disucssion of canids, the word that begins with "b" is the correct & proper term & not a cuss word. If you are discussing the ancestry of donkeys in a discussion on equids, the word that begins with "a" is the correct & proper term too. If they are used in other contexts, they are cuss words. The correct term for a rather large body part is "buttock". :)

Of course, I am not speaking for the mods. Their take is the one we have to abide by, but if someone is discussing breeding dogs, what else do you call an intact female canid that you are planning to breed?
 
There is no final word, and I don't expect that there will ever be one.

I can't imagine dinging someone for referencing an Asiatic ass, for writing "LMAO," or for calling their non-feeder hatchling a p.i.t.a..
