Another opinions wanted thread. Sight sexing.

You guess on this snakes gender?

Tavia

Elemental Exotics
I'm aware that sight sexing is the least accurate method, but there is no easy way to get this one probed. Also I don't really care what gender it is, so everyone's best guess is great. Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

When I first got her, I thought she looked female. But now that she's almost grown I'm not as "sure." When I look at her straight on, I think male, but from the side, think female. :shrugs:
S/he got in an interesting position the other day that was perfect for getting some pics of the right area. So I decided to get everyone's opinion on it. Thanks every who's voted for far!

No idea - 50/50 chance to get it right. There is just so much variation with sexing by tail shape, that I have absolutely no confidence to call it one way or the other. I have females that you'd swear were males based on visual sexing and vice versa.

I say it looks male. I think sight sexing is harder to do on babies. I have a male that looks like a female. The base of the tail looks thinner on males.

Your pictures are a little blurry, but I did a quick subcaudal scale-count anyway, and got about 65. Which is pretty inconclusive. I would vaguely speculate female, but there is absolutely no reason to believe me. :) The scale-count method is uninvasive and a pleasantly boring way to spend the first cup of coffee in the morning, so next time you get a complete shed, you could try that. I got a sufficiently clear reading on Whisper to be pretty sure she's female, but then, her subcaudal scale count was only 50. (And I'm never breeding her either, so I just did it to have a handy pronoun.)

Also, the scale-count method is not incredibly reliable, but it works well enough if you don't really care and are just trying to figure out how to refer to them. Don't plan breeding based on it, though!

Well, looking like I might need to change pronouns! There is a small possibility that I might let my brother have Tavi (this snake) & he will probably be pleased that it might be a boy, though he won't really care either. He's talked about getting a snake a bit but so far isn't sure yet. He likes the Classic corns the best. However he likes the look of the boas & pythons as well & might decide to go that way, if he does decide to get a snake at all. I named the snake Octavius or Octavia, using Tavi while gender is unknown. Was going to use Tavia or Tavius for short if I ever found out for sure.
