Looking For Advice Regarding Flabby Female That Was Eggbound Last Year

starsevol

Cohabbing is cruelty...
My female Sangria went into brumation in November weighing 648g. She came out today weighing 657g! For the life of me, I don't understand how it could happen. Everybody else lost a few grams here and there from not eating all winter. This girl was a garbage disposal when she was a baby, and has fatty "hips" now.

She was eggbound last year. She lacked the muscle tone to push her eggs out in a timely manner. She did fine in 2006 and had some beautiful babies but last year not a single egg hatched. She is all recovered now, and took care of it on her own, but the last thing I want is a repeat of last year. I intend to hold her for 30 minutes each day to excercise her but is there anything else I can do to ensure success this year? Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do for it?

Here she is in all her flabbiness. I could not adjust the color on that last pic, the lighting was all wrong. The other pics are a much more accurate depiction of her real color.

I read a simular thread yesterday, letting your snake go up and down the stairs is supposed to be good exercise for them.

I just read that having them crawl up and down stairs was good exercise. Do you know how to do the cornsnake treadmill? You hold the head with your right hand, and put the snake in a sort of figure eight in your left hand, then twist the snake like you are winding yarn, while holding the head steady. The snake will crawl without going anywhere. I learned it from Kathy Love. She says it's good for tiring snakes out for photoshoots, so they are good models!

By crikey she's a biggun! As well as the stairs, a swim in the bath would be good exercise for her, but I'm wondering if she'll be toned enough to breed safely this year.

Yeah, if she were mine I would swim her every day. The swimming is good exercise, as are the attempts to get out of the tub. And I find it less time intensive for me than holding them--I can do other things like read, etc.

OK, tomorrow I buy a water thermometer.
My girls gonna get fit, and get her 06 body back (even though she had hips in 06 too!)

Snake treadmill, I gotta try that.
And we have stairs.

I'm about to become a snakey drill sgt!

You know what's really cool, and useful for other things too, is an infrared thermometer/temp gun.

Sounds very high tech Nanci!

Last year, she laid her eggs about a week later than she should have, and retained 6.
She eventually laid them and had no trouble at all.
This year I want eggs shooting into the box no later than day 13 after the pre lay shed.

They aren't very expensive, though. You don't really need the laser light.

Last year my boxie gained weight the whole time she was brumating. I don't know how they do it, either.

I saw this girl over at freedom and commented on her but now at least I understand what's going on with her.
The weight gain I assume isn't from an immense build up of feces? Or perhaps she's gravid again just being prepared?

Good luck working her out though.

Jen she hasnt eaten since the first week of November, or pooped since the second week of November!

She has "hips", but has had them since she was a 2 year old.

Here she is enjoying her swim.
The water temp is 80f.

What I always find weird about these hips is that the fat isn't through out the whole body, the first 2/3rds always looks good then the last half it's like they exploded.

Yeah, I know. In Kathy's book though she does say that hips don't get in the way of successful breeding, and in 06 she did GREAT.

I think she will be fine for breeding with a little toning up.

I have never seen a snake with hips before *blinks*

Have you taken her to the vet? Just in case?

She went to the vet in August for an X ray to make absolutely sure there were no eggs left in her. But I have seen pics of "hips" before, so that part doesn't worry me.

She HATES her nightly swims, though!
