I have a clutch of 13 eggs hatching. The cross is amelxtessera (was kind of an accident), but two of the babies are WAY lighter and pinker than their siblings. Can anyone help tell me if this is a normal color variation or the parents had a hidden het I didn’t know about? One has very light grey belly checks grey eyes and a ruby pupil. One has almost no checks on its belly and brown eyes. Only 2 out of 13 have this coloration. Here are pictures of them with normal colored siblings.

I’m so confused!

Either both parents were het hypo or one was het ultra and combined with the amel parent, made a few ultramel babies. The ruby pupil sounds more like ultramel than hypo.

I agree with hypnoctopus. That one pinkish baby looks exactly like an Ultramel to me, so perhaps that lighter Tessera is an Ultra. The lack of belly checks is likely due to Tessera. I've seen Tessera with fully black bellies, normal checks and completely patternless. If you could post pics of the parents we might be able to clarify more.

Well, if one parent is het ultra and the other parent is homozygous amel, you wouldn't be able to get any ultra babies. Only normals and ultramels, since ultra and amel are allelic.

But I agree, seeing the parents is a good idea!
