Nope not on a dimmer or thermostat. Its coming from the UTH,I unplug it and the noise stops. BTW Im originally from a city near you...Anderson.

well congrats on getting away :sidestep: I would suggest getting that UTH on a dimmer at the very least as soon as possible, because I know from experience that at 50 gal UTH will get well over 150* at the glass. are you measuring your temps with a digital with the probe on the glass or do you just have a thermometer stuck on the back of the tank somewhere? Remember that heat will kill a corn quicker than anything and I'm sure you don't want to have to see your little one with scars everytime you look at them. I got lucky and the thermal damage mine suffered was only from an incandescent bulb and the scar disappeared after 2 sheds, but a UTH burn would be nasty from what I've heard.

Yeah I got away 19 yrs ago LOL
Its a 30-40 gal UTH and my tank is a 20...so will that get too hot too? I am using a digi thermometer,it reads 85 on the glass bottom and air it reads 82 ,these numbers are for the warmest side of the tank. I am seriously thinking about taking the UTH back, just in case something is wrong with it.

It wouldn't hurt to take it back if you are worried about it. Just tell them its not heating. I'm sure it would still get too hot, as my 10-20 gal UTH's are on thermostats and they cycle off more than they are on with it set at 84. I'll snap some pics of how I do my UTH's as well as my thermostat setup and post them so you can get an idea. I put 4" square ceramic tiles on the stickey side of my UTH so that I don't have to stick it directly to the tank, and the little feet still allow plenty of clearance for the cord. Then I use a little bit of silicone to stick the thermometer probe to the inside of the glass directly above the center of the UTH. Stick my thermostat probe right next to the other and set it and I'm good. A dimmer is good too, as long as the room temp where the tank is is fairly constant, but mine took a while to regulate it and get my temps right, so I would suggest doing it while you are on a feeding break so you don't cause a regurge by having temps too low, since its best to start at the lowest setting and work your way up until you reach the desired temps. Just don't fret too much over a degree or two fluctuation because mother nature certainly cant keep it 84 year round, though most of us would love that over the recent weather here. below are pics of the UTH, from both sides, and the thermostat that I use. While I was at it I happened to catch my little one out and about so I caught her on a couple pics

Mine looks like the one in misc snake discussions under This snake is beautiful....but what kind of corn is it?? His color is almost mahagony.
Yours is gorgeous, what kind is that?
Thanks so much for the pics, now I know what to do.
I am just really concerned with it over heating and burning him and possibly fire too,yes I am paranoid,I cant deny it!

Don't worry about being paranoid..... its better to be safe then sorry. I got my thermostat for around 35 bucks, but you can pick up a plug-in lamp dimmer from the local lowes or home depot for around 11 dollars. they will work fine as long as your tank isn't sitting outside or in a basement with no climate control. my little one is a snow stripe, just shows a LOT of pink. burning is definitely a serious issue so its better safe than sorry. good luck and glad to see you are asking questions instead of just winging it like some people will.

Thanks so much for all the info and advice you have given me. I can't just wing it,its not in my nature LOL
I'll do and redo til I get something right if I must, especially when it involves living beings in my care.

glad to hear that.... o and by the way... welcome, as you can see we will answer a lot of questions, but try to brush off the rash comments if some of the "elders" get short about you asking a question instead of searching for it, since it most likely has been answered before. I recommend the search fuction highly when you can use it and its helped me out a lot
