ROCK HILL, S.C. --

Rock Hill police said a man was assaulted with a 4-foot python during a dispute with another man at a motel.

The police report said that Jeffrey Culp, 47, and Tony Smith, 29, were both staying at the Executive Inn.

Culp said he had argued with Smith on Tuesday evening over the volume of music he was playing. Culp said a while later, he and his wife stepped outside to smoke, and Smith approached them. Culp said Smith then hit in the head with the python.

Smith is charged with assault and battery. He is being held in the Rock Hill jail. The snake was released into the custody of family members before Smith was booked.
 
The animal rights laws don't extend to anything not a common, fuzzy pet, or a farm animal. Could it be assault with a deadly weapon? I mean,if the python really wanted to...
 
I would bet if I whacked you with a kitten somebody would think about cruelty to the cat.

Ye gods - what an idiot...

I hope the snake is ok :( - there was some of this sort of idiot behaviour on the motorbicycles site I was on - like the two nerks that thought that re-enacting medieval jousts on machines that will hit 35mph is a great idea... impaled through the guts by a large stick is not a pleasant way to spend an evening...

I hope they throw the book at this idiot....

I'm right there with you. Doesn't make any sense how this wouldn't be considered cruelty?

I remember showing my mother's friend and her daughter my snake collection a few years back. I took out my Ball Python, and the woman's daughter says "that's the same type of snake that (so and so) threw at me *laugh*". Needless to say, I didn't find it very amusing. Actually, it disgusted me to think that someone would just throw a snake at someone. They found it less funny when I told them that snakes actually do have bones, organs, etc... and a fall like that could easily kill them or cause suffering.
