Students in CA sent home for wearing flags

They've been doing that in Collier County, Florida for about 7 years, now. It started with students wanting to wear the Confederate flag. In an attempt to be PC, all flags were banned. I didn't really see a big deal with it, as long as they complied with all flags. Even Mexican flags on Cinco de Mayo were banned.

That's fine... if all flags are banned, we're equal... but to send home students wearing American flag shirts is ridiculous. I myself have several tees with American flag images on them and I rarely think about that. What if that were the case here?

Now, if these kids were wearing them and acting belligerently solely to draw a reaction from Latino students, then that is not appropriate- but it's the behavior that is wrong, not the shirt.

Agreed. Especially if a policy like that had never been enforced before that morning with no prior warning for the students to know that they could be sent home for the day for breaking a rule they never knew existed.

Although it was many years ago 25+ I worked in an ER in San Bernardino, CA. I hated working May 5th because of the fighting, killings between Mexican nationals and Americna born Mexican. It was awful. So while I want to be able to wear what I want, I try to be respectful.

I understand what the principal did, due to there being history on the subject of violence between two groups.. And, some immature teen could have perceived that since they were wearing the American flag on a certain holiday, it meant someone wanted to fight....
But I would have been right beside those boys fighting for their rights to wear whatever flagged shirt they wanted to... You can almost be 100% positive that someone was wearing a Mexican flag shirt that day... Heck, I saw people up at my college wearing Mexican flag shirts..

I just don't see why people have to be so sensitive about things.
Sending those boys home for wearing a shirt that was patriotic to their country was wrong...

But if they sent kids home for wearing Mexican flag shirts on the 4th of July they would be racists...

They've had to change many policies from when I attended public school. Much of these alterations are from the Child Left Behind of the Bush administration. Tensions exist between students of different nationalities, they always have. This is a problem that maturity addresses. That out of the way, I don't see why the Latin Americans should have problems with the stars and stripes worn on May 5th. If the students donned French flags and ran about shouting; "Viva la France!" then yes, that would be over doing it.

Yea, my home town made the news. I actually went to Live Oak, they expelled me though. :grin01: So glad my son is going to the other high school in town.

I thought the same thing, about wearing a Mexican flag on the 4th of July....

Is that even legal? Cinco de Mayo isn't even an American holiday not to mention this is America last time I checked. I don't think it should matter what flag a student wants to wear period and asking them to abstain from promoting their nationality is racist. Let it be a Mexican flag, Italian, or any other we are free to wear our country of origins colors proudly on any holiday even a Mexican one. I think the message that school system sent was "people are racist and it causes us headaches so pretend to be unamerican for the day please". WTF? I would have flipped if that were my kid:(

The funny thing is is that Cinco de Mayo isn't ven a Mexican national holiday. Its only celebrated in certain parts of the country. A friend of mine was traveling around in Mexico a few years back and she went to this bar in a large town on May 5th and wondered why no one was celebrating. She asked them and they told her they'd never heard of Cinco de Mayo.

I always thought Cinco de Mayo was zombie day anyways.

Oh excuse me. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

EDIT: Nevermind. It's actually a day celebrating the Mexican army's victory over the French army. Not that much of a reason to celebrate, if you ask me. :grin01:
(Sorry... just couldn't help myself)

What country is California in? Just wondering.

Maybe one day a year ALL of the students should be required to wear the American flag just so nobody forgets what country they are in.

NOTE: If you find this comment offensive, I am sorry, that is not what I meant. I think everyone is wonderful and it's a lovely day. All is right with the world. Unless you think all is wrong with the world and then of course, I agree. I don't intend my agreement to be condescending in any way. I truly agree with everything you have said or plan to say. Please don't consider this to be antagonistic or confrontational. I'm sure I have worded this poorly and caused you to misunderstand my intention.

That's not a liberal problem, that's a rampant stupidity problem.

But more importantly... Carol? Expelled from highschool? *boggles* But you're so nice!
