Sticking To The Ceiling
So today (yesterday actually), I was at Pet Supermarket checking out a tegu they had, which is a large carnivorous lizard that's somewhat like a monitor, and while I was picking it up, it was slapping my hand with its tail, but that's why I was picking it up; to help tame it a bit. Well, I've got my fingers lightly wrapped around it, and it swings its head over, bites onto my thumb, and PUUULLLLLLS.

So it hurt a bit initially, but didn't stop be from regrabbing the tegu and picking it up. And while I'm holding it, I find it's nice and calm now that it's out of its tank, so I glance at the bite. It's a little red, hurts a bit more, and has some scratch looking areas that look like they might ooze a little blood.

Well, after about ten minutes of holding the tegu and showing it to a few customers passing by, I put it back and go into the Employees bathroom to wash the wound. Heh, yeahhh... the three main scratches from its teeth are bleeding a little, but enough to be soaked up with a paper towel. So I washed my hands and the bite real good about three times, got it to stop bleeding for the most part, and applied some anti-bacterial cream to it (I keep it in my pocket whenever I know I'm going to play with ferrets, and they can scratch you real bad sometimes, even if they're just playing).

So I went to the front of the stored and played with the rabbits (one of which FREAKING BIT ONTO MY HAND, and then PULLED on the skin it had MULTIPLE TIMES! WTF!? I didn't think rabbits bit for no freaking reason! And not like a dog trying to eat a rawhide chewy!) and ferrets for a while, then went home. I had some shrimp for dinner, and about an hour or so after getting home, I go to the bathroom, and while I'm washing my hands, I notice the bite is red, swollen where its red, tender and painful.

Now, the tegu is probably a month old at the most, but around 4 inches long without the tail, but muscular. The bite wasn't like this at first, and it hurts constantly, but isn't throbbing or shooting pain; it's just pain that's there. Not only is the wound where it's swelling REALLY red, but my thumb in the general area has some light red to it. It was hard to get the coloring right, but it seems okay to me. It's impossible to see the swelling though. Just wondering what you guys think. It's been about 12 hours since the bite, so I guess it might get better. *shrug*

Holy Cow! Don't you know that tegu bites are almost as bad as those of the Komodo Dragon? The bacteria in the bite is what kills the prey...in a few days.

JUST KIDDING!! I hope...

In my non-professional opinion when it comes to tegu bites, the wound doesn't look too bad. The pain is probably just because of the trauma from the pulling and from the teeth scraping the top skin layer, not the punctures. But continue to keep it clean and bandaged with antibiotic ointment, and should it get redder or more painful, get thee to a doctor, just in case.

Lizard bites hurt like CRAZY!!! I wouldn't worry.

I just heard on the news that they found a tegu in the Ocala National Forest to the south of me. I wonder what's up with that!

That means that they are now breeding and will be banned soon, if they aren't already.:nyah:

OH MY GOSH

Get to a hospital QUICK, tegus are EXTREMELY venomous!!!

(or put some antibiotic cream on it and watch over the next few days for any swelling or real tenderness... and welcome to the bite club!)

We have a 3 yr old male Black and White Argentine Tegu here. We have raised him since he was only 4 weeks old. He is very handable, BUT when he thinks it is food time or more like when HE is hungry, he will offer to take your hand off. I have never had the displeasure of his bite. My sweatshirt, on the other hand, has.

I know I would not want to have him get ahold of my hand ever! I do clip his claws for him. His claws are very sharp and can cut worse than a kitten can.

Seeing that most tegus eat some kind of raw diet, raw fruits and some are even offered raw eggs, you have to keep their bites and cuts very clean! It will hurt for a few days but should get better. Are you sure you didnt sprain your finger when you pulled away? Can you bend your finger without any issues? Just the mother in me asking, keep it clean, apply some anitbiotic cream, some ice and you should be just fine!

Be thankful you didnt need stitches, you would if it were "Demios" that got you on the thumb. :sidestep:

Swellings down a bit, but nothing really different right now. Hurts though. xD
Will keep an eye on it still.

Especially when they have teeth. :sidestep:

Loose pet? Some species get real big, but in pet stores, they're the perfect size. I'm sure lots of people release them.

You are a chew toy!!!

EVERYTHING was biting me yesterday. xD

And my dad got bitten by the neighbor's dog (pretty harmless bite though) and my grandfather's dog got mauled by a pit bull (which supports my disliking of pits) the other day. My family seems to be keen to animal bites. XD

I'm pretty sure I want a tegu in the future, how fast did he grow? And how big is he now? I know they differ by species, but still, curious.

I didn't really pull away when it bit me, but IT pulled on my thumb a bit. I don't think anything's wrong besides the bite; functions perfectly fine. I think the only thing the tegu's been eating is purely crickets, so no real worry about bacteria from raw meat, I think. Hurts a lot, still, though.

Another reason I'm glad it was a BABY. XD

Soak the bite area in warm water & Epsom salts. That's me cure-all for any bite or cut. It really works!
