My Sugar Gliders

I had a request for photos of my suggie setup. The first half of the photos are from last night. The suggies weren't feeling all that cooperative. LOL! Tonight I got to take some more of everybody, though. Enjoy!


The sugar glider mansion, affectionately known as the "Suggie Shack"

Another picture for scale... the cage is big enough that if I take the floor out of it, I can stand inside without ducking my head at the peak at all! (Please ignore the dump zone which is my couch... I was being lazy.)

Some closer shots to show off their toys. These are actually only half of their toys. The other half is out for cleaning. I try to keep everything a rotation so they don't get too bored with anything.

Elphaba finally decided to grace me with her presence. LOL. Lazy suggie...

The rest are from tonight, when the crew was being slightly more cooperative.

Big kid Teller. He turned five years old early this spring. He's a sweet, quiet, squishy boy.

Elphaba. She just turned two years old. Yes, she is pretty much this kind of IN YOUR FACE most of the time.

Elphaba again. She doesn't hold still much.

The white faces, Fiyero and Glinda, were still being anti-social so I turned their pouch inside out to take some photos. As you can see, they were less than thrilled with me. Fiyero is two years old, same as Elphie. Glinda will turn two in December. (Fiyero is the one facing the camera, I think.)

"Seriously, Mom, this isn't fair!"

"If I make faces at the camera, will you stop taking pictures?"

Meanwhile, Elphaba is waiting for a yogurt drop treat. Patience is not really her strong suit. Lol!

Back to the white faces, whom have forgiven me slightly because they were also given treats. (Fiyero in front, Glinda behind him.)

Thanks. It's true they do need a lot of time and space. They're not the ideal pet for everyone, but they work out well for us. We've been having a lot of fun as suggie parents!

Yes indeedy! The younger three all have Wicked names. It seemed fitting for a group of "flying monkeys". LOL! Teller's name comes from "Penn & Teller". We used to have a Penn, too, but sadly he died a little over two years ago. We still miss him a lot.

Are they all in one cage? I thought they needed MUCH more space than one cage... although the cage in the pics seems pretty good sized. I'm only asking for clarification.

Yes, the four are all in that one cage. As I said, though, it is a HUGE cage! It is the biggest wire cage I've found with bar spacing 1/2" or less (I don't remember the dimensions off the top of my head, but I could look them up if you'd like). It is plenty big for four suggies. Even so, I make sure there are at least four different sleeping places in there at any given time, so they can sleep apart from each other if they want to... they usually don't, though. LOL!

We do have two "backup" cages in case there is ever a problem. One is a little less than 1/2 the size... the other is maybe a little smaller than 1/3 (that one's actually a rat cage, but would work in a pinch). We like to have a plan B available.

Thank you. I think they enjoy it. They are actually due for a toy rotation in not too long. It's always a hoot when they "rediscover" the toys that have been out for cleaning.

It depends on the day as to how much they bark. Sometimes they are pretty quiet all night. Other times it sounds like they are trying to assemble a suggie barbershop quartet. LOL! Their harmonizing isn't very good. LOL!

I forgot to add regarding cage size! They also get playtime outside the cage a couple times a week. We have a pop-up screen tent (with closed floor) that we can sit in and let them run around in the evenings. So they get a lot of change of scenery.

Thank you! My husband and I are very passionate about our animals, and especially with the sugar gliders because they are such new, exotic, and uncommon pets. As I told Lucille, while there is more than one way to care for them correctly, there are MANY MANY more sources out there with incredibly poor information. We don't claim to be "experts" by any means, but we have done our research and like to help out where we can on promoting good sugar glider care.

Yeah Cynthia turned me on to this great site called Suncoast that has lots of glider info. Prior to acquiring my gliders I did a lot of research, and even more afterwards. There is this one site that shows a vet dude who essentially said it was OK to keep gliders in small cages and feed them kibble (that the company sponsoring the vet dude's videos sold of course) and just a slice of apple or something.
Suncoast wrote an awesome article about how gliders need more than just enough to let them exist, and I am busy spoiling mine and eating healthier myself also with the focus on fruits and veggies.

What is a little bit scary to me is that I almost bought the vet dude's kibble patter. Because he was a vet dude and he should know, right?

The ScatMat actually works pretty well. Granted, it's not doing much to keep the cats away from the cage, as they can just sit on the couch arm and pull back the fleece curtain. Really, I put it there to discourage them from sitting there and watching "suggie TV" forever. LOL. I don't know how much interest they had to begin with, but I figured it was worth a shot.

However, the ScatMat has been AMAZING to keep on top of a dresser or counter to keep the cats from jumping up and knocking things over. While it isn't doing too much in it's current placement, it has been quite useful in the past. It has three different power settings, depending on how persistent your cat is. (Our Ticheli is VERY persistent. LOL!)

That is indeed the trouble. People that are interested in suggies really need to make sure they look at LOTS of different resources and get a well-rounded base of information. That is why I like Lisa at Suncoast Sugar Gliders a lot. She is always studying, seeking new information and the next step in bettering the care of captive suggies.

I wish I had a big screened porch! That sounds fun! Our suggies are going to have to settle for the Suggie Shack Mansion and indoor tent time for the time being, though.
