J.J. Abrams' Super 8 Slated for Summer 2011 Release

While I am heavily into Ufology and also enjoy watching Lost, I cannot say that I am a JJ Abrams fan, especially after watching the unoriginal and uninspired film's Cloverfield and Star Trek. Even the trailer does little to excite me which is disappointing. To me, it almost looks like it's going to be something like "The son of the Cloverfield monster". I mean, why does it have to punch it's way out of a metal boxcar a la Hulk style and why only after the train is derailed? I dunno, I guess I'm just jaded to how most movies/stories are so overly exaggerated anymore. :headbang:

I am however a bit excited about the new Predators movie which looks like it's going back to it's roots of the jungle hunt type of stuff. Knowing my luck, it will probably suck like the AVP movies did but I do love the first 2 Predator movies, so I'm hoping for something a little better. :)

The best thing about these movies are all the viral campaigns that spring up. Currently I'm following sites that are, in turn, following the viral site www.scariestthingieversaw.com which is what is spelled out in the film roll at the end of the trailer. Quite interesting to try and solve the puzzles!

wtf!! how come I didnt know about this movie!!! it looks freaking awesome!!!

I liked Cloverfield!!

I can't say that I hated Cloverfield, but when it became apparent that it was a Godzilla type of rip-off (J.J. Abrams even admitted that Godzilla was his motivation for making this movie, to have an American type of Godzilla), then the throwing of the Statue Of Liberty's head became somewhat ridiculous to me when I realized what had actually done it and I totally lost interest thereafter. I was totally hoping it was more of an HP Lovecraft "Cthulhu" style of movie which would have made more sense to me.

But I'm glad you liked it! :)

If you are not familiar with HP Lovecraft's stories, then I highly suggest the movie Dagon which is probably one of the better movie adaptations to his works. Actually, the remake of The Thing (John Carpenter's version) is very reminiscent of an HP Lovecraft story.

Wow, I hadn't seen this preview before, It looks like it will be an interesting movie... Though most likely one I will have to take the brother in law to see, because my wife will not like it...lol

I have to say, that I laughed the whole time while watching Cloverfield. I thought it was hilarious... I know it probably wasn't supposed to be, but I enjoyed it.
Star Trek was an awesome movie. I loved how it wasn't an exact copy and he opened it up for a different story line, like so many comic book companies do, how many universes does DC and Marvel have now?

You said that you don't like movies that didn't take imagination... and then you stated that you can't wait for the new Predator movie...
In all honesty, from what I have seen in the previews for that movie, The only person it is missing is Arnold Schwarzenegger from being an almost exact copy of the original.
Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see Predator either, I love the series and enjoyed AvP almost as much as the original Alien and Predator movies.

I think it would also be pretty awesome for a Cthulhu movie to come out... Though I think the Mist was as close to Cthulu as anyone wants to get right now...lol.

You said that you don't like movies that didn't take imagination...
Show me where I said that and I'll give you a cookie!

What I did say was that I thought that Cloverfield and Star Trek both were unoriginal and uninspired. I was talking in direct relation to J.J. Abrams story telling capability.

While Star Trek was ok, I just didn't think it really added anything to the franchise story wise. But I admit, I'm not a Trekkie. The only Star Trek I really really like is The Wrath Of Khan and even that has it's own flavor of cheese in it.

and then you stated that you can't wait for the new Predator movie..

This is true, I can't wait for the new Predator movie. There is no contradiction in my words because I never said what you stated above. You misunderstood and misconstrued what I said, simple as that! But you are correct, this new Predator movie will be somewhat close to how the original is, save for the fact that it will take place on a different planet, the characters will consist mainly of criminals and there will be more than one predator, apparently.

Though I think the Mist was as close to Cthulu as anyone wants to get right now.

Actually, you'd be terribly surprised at how many HP Lovecraft movies have been made and are still being made today. I have the pleasure of attending the annual HP Lovecraft Film Festival almost every year. It amazes me at how many people are inspired by HP Lovecraft to keep spending their money to fund all of these movies, even the short films. They aren't all good, no doubt about it, but they are still being made and put out there!

In regards to Cthulhu movies, there actually was a black and white silent film made of The Call Of Cthulhu a few years ago. We got to see the premiere of it at the festival along with the cast and crew that put it together. They even had a display of the model of Cthulhu they used. It was really cool!

As I also stated before, Dagon is a very good movie. It's got Deep One hybrids, it's got Dagon, it takes place in a very dark and creepy coastal town and it's also got this cute and creepy squid girl!
