Male or Female?

How long does it take to find out weather you have a male or female corn snake? How can you find out? What are the differences between male and female snakes?

How old is your snake?
Hatchlings can be sexed by "popping", done by an experienced person, or, when they're older, they can be probed,(also by experienced person) to determine the sex.

There are physical differences, with the tail, that you can sometimes tell, but I don't have the book with me to explain it.
I'm sure others will jump in & explain :)

i dont know how old he is and i am wondering. he is about 12 - 14 inches long and still eating pinkie mice

I'm still fairly new myself. This forum, along with a couple books have been very helpful in learning more about cornsnakes & caring for them.
Some books to check out:
Corn Snakes In Captivity-by Don Soderberg (I picked up a used one on Amazon, that ended up an autographed copy, for pretty cheap).

Corn snakes; The Comprehensive Owner's Guide-by Kathy Love & Bill Love

Another very helpful book is Cornsnake Morph Guide

Your snake is likely less than a year old. I have hatchlings that are 11", & they're 4 weeks old.
I don't know how old is "too old" to pop the babies, for sexing.

A good thing to have on hand is a digital scale. You can pick one up at Walmart for $20-$35, depending on which one you get. I got the one that goes up to 11lbs, for $35.
It's a good idea to track the weight of your snake.

There's a lot of knowledge on this forum, & you will pick up alot from the people here.

Quick hi-jack: Can you sex corns with scale counts? I haven't read anything about it, but by my thinking, if male corns have longer tails after the vent than compared to females, shouldn't they have more belly scales than a female?

I believe so. I remember hearing something about that. (That's what I meant by physical differences in the tail, but I will have to search for that info.)

males 70-72ish females 60ish good luck with that. lol they dont hold still long enough to count... i tried. can you imagine a giant holding you up in the air to look at your backside? aaawwwkkkkwaaard...

Im guessing you can look count the scales on their most recent shed?

Parzi: And yes the two methods are Popping and Probing. Both done by a professional (its safer that way)

If it is done correctly both popping and probing can be done in a matter of seconds. I did a guess the gender photo thing just before probing and a lot of people said male female male and it was actually female, male and male. Or something like that lol. One they said was female was a male that had lost his tail tip, the one they said was female was a nice sized 5 year old male! They got the youngest right lol. Seems the older they get and their condition can influence the visual gendering. So its best to get them probed when big enough by someone who knows how and if you intend to breed at some point you should get them to teach you how to do it too.

I have a proven female outside of the range. She has 70 scales :uhoh: she doesn't read or believe in guidelines or rules of thumb even when I explain these things to her lol. I can't count my 2 tiny snakes' scales, so for rest of mine 8 of 9 fit the ranges male 65-75, female 55-65. One lost end of 'her' tail when young and not willing to handle to try probe that one and get kissed, so it is 'she' :shrugs:
the two tinies sold me as m/f pair both pop female, so I'm not gonna trust that and wait for them grow a while and see when i probe.

Tail shape (works on yearlings or older) I think you can only be 70% right.

Anyone have that link to sexing amels/amel morphs by light?

I've never heard of being able to tell genders on amels with light. I imagine that has to be done young though. I can't see anything on my male amel that would tell me he is a he. I probed him and he bred for me.
