Yesterday we went to the PDX reptile expo in Wilsonville. Met some nice people (again) and got a beautiful crimson corn snake from a local vendor who is also a member, here.

Just before we left, we went by the wholesale/bulk feeder booth, which I hadn't been by, earlier. He had a handful of snakes on his table. Mostly milksnakes and an aberrant pattern California kingsnake. These guys were all priced at $25, no matter what the size or species. I saw a real beauty, and asked him what it was. "Milksnake" was what he said. But what kind? He didn't know, or care (crotchety ol' fella). I get the feeling he maybe traded with someone for food (he sells f/t rodents, etc. all the way up to rabbits in size), because he just really did NOT care what they were, as long as they sold.

So I brought the prettiest one home and looked online. I _think_ it's a Pueblan Milksnake. Maybe knowledgeable people will have a clue? Anyway, here's the flighty little thing. I don't know the gender, and I don't know if it will ever tame down. If you have one, can you tell me if they're "display-only" snakes, or if they can be tamed down enough to make them nice pets?

I agree that it's a pueblan but I'm not an expert. I love milks. They have such vivid colors. I heard they calm down with frequent handling too.

awesome pick up and to me it does look like a pueblan a really nice one at that....i have a pair of hypo Honduran milks and my male is as calm as can b but my female is still kinda flighty little thing and ive had them for a year now. But i have to say neither has ever nipped or tried to nip me. they are some of my favs in my collection.
 
That is an Apricot Pueblan Milksnake. They can be very flighty and quick. We had one at work that liked to bite but not let go!
 
Thanks for the info. I hope s/he'll be one I can handle, but if not, I'll enjoy just looking. Considering the care sheet info I find says they're nocturnal, though (and I'm most definitely NOT!), not sure how easy that would be :).

The guy had several milksnakes, there (no Mexican black ones, though, which I was specifically looking for), and this one was by far and away the most beautiful and vibrant. $25 seemed like a good enough price, too. So home it came!

He was actually kind of a "consolation prize". I REALLY wanted a Hogg Island Boa I saw, but Z said we can't afford it this week. I was sad. This guy made me smile, though :).
 
I've had a couple of milk snakes, which were both very flighty, hated to be handled and loved to musk. One escaped, and I gave the other one away, because I just didn't like her nasty temperament. I have heard they can become fairly nice with handling and maturity. I hope yours will settle down and be a nice pet. It sure is pretty!

I've had Honduran milks before and they were great to handle. they moved a little more than corn snakes, but never bit or musked me. Not sure what the Pueblans are like though.
 
Yep :). Now I just have to see if I can get him to be somewhat tame. So far (yesterday--s/he's currently acclimating) he hasn't bitten or musked, but s/he's definitely flighty, whipping his/her head around and trying to sneak out of my hands when I had it gathered in a ball in my palm. We shall see! Bitey is ok. Musky, not so much :).
 
I have had my albino nelsons milksnake since Nov. and even with frequent handling it still strikes, musks and is flighty. I have tried to get rid of it but no one wants a biting snake, lol. I just take it out for feeding now because I don't like it's temperment. Really sucks because it is so pretty. I'm hoping to find a good home for it or also hoping that with time it will calm down. Good luck with yours! It is very pretty!

I was looking at the aberrant cali, looked a lot like my Zafrina, might have even been a jungle, he asked 30 for it when I asked but the lack of info on it bugged me so I didn't get it. Glad I saved my money though, got a really pretty leopard gecko.

Your little snakelett is quite pretty also :D
