Walk in the Desert with a Camera

Yup...out for a walk in the desert, camera and tripod in tote, looking for something to take a photo of...

Bishop Range of the Eastern Sierra

That's it. Just a couple random landscapes from a walk around the Buttermilk Boulders...

Thanks for taking the time to look!!

You must be related to Ansel Adams :).

They're all magnificent photos. I can tell that you have a deep appreciation for your surroundings. Do you live in the desert, or do you drive or bike there to take photos? How hot or cold is it right now?

I live in the high desert at the feet of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, sitting at about 4,000' in elevation. It still gets cold, though we have been experiencing a typical "January Thaw" for the past couple weeks. Average daytime temps in the winter are around 30-40*F. Summer daytime temps average around 95-105*F.

Beautiful pictures yet again! You don't ever disappoint me with your photos! I wish I had that kind of talent. You need to take a trip to Yosemite National Park in the spring! Even I get good pictures up there and I suck lol. I'm sure yours would be breathtaking!!!

I live less than 2 hours from Yosemite. I try really, REALLY hard to avoid the "tourist spots", such as Yosemite, though I have been "caught" shooting at Mono Lake. My goals are to shoot different locations and to show people the parts of this gorgeous mountain range that they actually have to leave the car to see..

The problem with locations in Yosemite is that you have to stand elbow to elbow with 30 other photographers, just to get a shot. I have a couple of overnight trips planned to some different locations inside Yosemite park this apring. We'll see what happens...

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to look and comment!

i hope you dont mind but that 1st pic is now my laptop desktop page

I don't mind. They are resized so that they can't be very easily printed...at least not at a profitable size. Anything I share on the internet, unfortunately, I expect to be used, with or without permission, at some point, by someone. The fact that you like enough to use it, and care enough to let me know about it, is flattering. Enjoy.

Chris, do you have these in color too? I would love to see these beautiful pictures in color.

I capture in RAW format, so every picture I bring home is in color. They have to be converted to B&W. But trust me when I tell you that these pictures are not very exciting in color. They are fairly bland, low contrast, and not at all interesting in color.

When I shoot for a final B&W image, it is a decision that is made long before the shutter is released. Good B&W exposures are different than good color exposures of the same scene almost invariably. These shots were never intended to be shared in color, and they won't be. Sorry, but they just don't cut it in color...they were intended to be in B&W...

That's cool. I need some training in photography, never knew that different exposure would affect the picture to where it would look better in B&W.

Color is permanent. Blue is always blue, red is always red, and green is always green, no matter if they are overexposed(bright), underexposed(dark), or neutral. In B&W red, green, and blue are identical tones. You can create contrast in these tones using different colored filters.

For a B&W, tone is the key, and creating contrasts between tones. You expose for a specific dynamic range that compliments the tonality you are looking for. In color, you just want all of the colors to feel natural.

I know that might be difficult to understand, so here is one of these shots in the color format, before being converted to B&W--

You can see how bland it is...no color contrasts, and really not a "pretty picture" to look at. This is because there is no color dynamics. But in B&W--

All of a sudden, there are tonal contrasts, and a wider dynamic range going from bright white to deep black. This is the exact same image file, just processed for B&W, rather than color.

Clear as mud? ;)

Oh yeah, That does look a whole lot better in B&W, thank you for the comparison to help me understand what was being said.
