Idiots that can't identify snakes.

I love how snake stories become more and more exaggerated every time someone tells them. Just last year my local pet store became involved in an incident. A man failed to secure his two snakes and they escaped into the neighbor's house, unbeknown to the neighbor. One snake came up through her toilet plumbing. The other came up out of her washing machine (apparently it had survived the spin cycle). The woman brought both snakes in to my local pet store, and they took care of them until the owner returned to claim them.

The first time I was told this story was by a co-worker. His version involved 10-foot long, bone-crushing giant pythons. When I got the real, first-hand story from the pet shop owner, I learned that they were in fact harmless, 2.5-foot long ball pythons. I guess snakes are always larger in peoples' imaginations.

I love snakes, but I have to admit I would be pretty scared to have one come out of my toilet!

People are terrified of snakes! Some people actually step away from me when they discover that I have snakes, as if I carry them on my person and have them trained to attack!

People need education. Badly.

About proposed bans:
Plus, what happened to the Land of the Free?
I can't even own a harmless caged reptile? Dogs are fine. Lizards are fine. Snakes are not. WHAT?!?

It's is very frustrating how ignorant people can be.

During my rental inspection, I was showing my landlord how secure the enclosures were, & assured his (evil) :madeuce:wife (who hates snakes) that they are all non venomous, & he replied "Are you sure? Because this one (pointing at my Alabama Corn snake, Mica) looks like a Diamondback Rattler..." Srsly!! :headbang:

Wow...............just, wow.

I will admit, what I use to be scared of snakes. But I had been told horror stories for most my life. I started doing a lot of reading about snakes because I found them fascinating but was under the impression they were aggressive and would bite a lot. After a lot of reading I realized how stupid this thinking was. After that....well its history.

I think if more people knew the truth about snakes, and what great pets they are we would not have people with some a horrible outlook on snakes.

I know I'm sure glad I got over my fear, I love my snakes.

The average person responds to the words "python" and "boa constrictor." It sounds menacing. We are a minority. I hope to see a news story about how tame and sweet snakes can actually be but it isn't realistic. The real reason people tune into the news is to see what horrible events happened. Scary stories get good ratings.

Last year I got a call at school from the head groundskeeper at Dundalk High, a neighboring HS. He told me his crew had been cutting the grass and had found a boa constrictor in the soccer field. Someone told them that Sparrows Point had a "crazy snake lady" and that she might take the snake, so he called me. I said he could bring it over and I'd do what I could to find it a new place to live.

Here is the dangerous boa on the day he was "captured."

What a cutie. I'm glad she's with somebody who will care for her.

The media and ignorance has done the same thing to the Pit Bull breed. It's a pit bull so automatically it's vicious. My daughter was viciously attacked by my neighbors shepard mix and required stitches in her face yet nothing was done to that dog nor the owner. I was told by the dog warden that "If it was a Pit Bull it would be different". I have owned pits and love the breed!

Dundalk huh....I lived there from 5 months of age (when I was adopted) until my parents divorce when I was 7 in 1975. Funny....didn't know you guys were near there. I lived at 7816 Kavanaugh Rd and went to Grange Elementary. Is that still school still there? I can't remember I can still remember that stuff!!

Now that is just ridiculous! A child has been scarred for life by a dog and nothing was done? The bite must be legally reported when your daughter received medical treatment. The owner needed to be held accountable, the dog quarantined at least in it's home for 10 days, and at least a "mark" on that dog's permanent record so that when it bites another person or two, it must be labeled as an aggressive dog, wear the special tags and a muzzle when taken out.

And I'm serious about the rally on Capital Hill. Get enough people, each holding a snake, and maybe someone will actually notice that none of the thousands are in danger of being killed. Get an equal number of people there, each with a dog on a leash and see just how non-dangerous dogs are. And don't even think about doing it with cats!

getting a visual...trainwrecky chaos ;)

My daughter was 7 when this happened and to this day big dogs scare her spitless. This dog had bitten other children but no one had reported it. I was the first. I had to pay her medical bills! I spoke to many attorneys and the owner of the dog "didn't have anything to take"......She drove semi for a living. She drove a brand new truck, she had just bought her daughter a horse and had her in riding lessons. IT WAS HER DOG, SHE SHOULD OF BEEN HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BILLS! She was not. The dog was "quarantined in it's own house.......to which they took it to my daughters bus stop every morning while they waited on the bus to pick up her daughter...while I drove my traumatized and terrifed daughter to school every morning and picked her up after school. That very same dog tried to attack me and I kicked it in the face! The owner threatened to sue me and call the law to which I told her if she didn't keep that dog on a leash I was going to be nice and feed it a yummy hamburger and all of our problems would be solved!

Yet I had an 8 week old Pit puppy and had to have $100,000 liability insurance on it and they wanted me to have her muzzled when we were out for a walk......she's a puppy!

Speaking of dog breeds...I get so irritated when people say "Oh my you have a ...whatever it may be...you must be crazy. Do you know what they can do to people? I would never have my child around that animal." And it carries over to our snakes. I get so pissed. We used to own Rottweilers and we constantly got that. And one of ours was such a baby that as soon as you looked at him he would roll onto his back for you to pet him. But we had a dalmation that attacked anything close to it. So it goes to show you it isn't the breed but the owners..most of the time. We had found him in a pound and wasn't told not to have him around other dogs. He attacked 2 dogs..but strangely enough, he didn't attack our other dogs. But we had to find him another home after he drug me 50 ft to attack a dog and I was 8 months pregnant with my first son. But our Rotties, they wouldn't even bark on command when we put them into training...and we had a neigbour who complained once and came after one with a 2x4 because she was walking in our backyard (we were putting up a fence and she was being a busy buddy trying to see what we were doing) and Kasey was walking towards her to be pet and she freaked and stormed out of her house afterwards with the 2x4. I jumped all over her...pissed me off big time. She had a huge lab and I bet no one would assume that dog was about to attack if it was walking towards them. This is the same neigbour who complained to the HOA because we vacuumed after 8 pm!!!! We at that time lived in a townhouse and the vacuuming bothered her! She was just strange..she actually vacuumed her lawn!! Yes, vacuumed. We had to eventually give our Kasey away because of her constant complaining. Okay so that was totally off topic...sorry had to rant...but it is the same with snakes. We had people call us "those kind of people" when were trying to find a place to rent last year. It wasn't an easy search to find someone who allowed the snakes. But luckily we did. And she didn't judge one bit. But there are still some people who say "Aren't you worried they are going to hurt your son." Okay yea, the big bad corn snake is going to eat him up! You don't know how many times I would have loved to say that :)

I had a 180 lb German Rott that my daughter would use as a pillow when she was 4. That dog loved people and was a complete teddy bear...until you tried to mess with his babies "my children" he would lay in our driveway and let every kid in the neighborhood in our yard to play but their parents stopped at the end of the driveway just because he was laying there. He was the best dog I have ever owned! I heard the same thing all the time. "I can't believe you have that huge dog with your children, arent you worried about him biting them" No, he wouldn't pick up a cookie off the floor if he wasn't told it was ok. And he was abused and starved almost to death when I resuced him. He loved my kids, any kid, endlessly. He never showed aggression ever! He loved to go to the pet store with me and pick out his treat. LOL He would carry it in his mouth to the counter and lay it on the counter for me to pay for it. The clerks loved him. Now with my snakes I get "I never would have guessed you to be that kind of person" What kind is that? What do I have three heads because I own BABY snakes?" I have a very low tolerance for stupidity!

I dont mean to sound like a psycho, but if a dog attacked my child and the law did nothing about it, I would walk past that house every day, and the one time it attacked me I would blow its brains out with my hand gun. What are they going to do? Sue me for self defence from a dog that has proven to be aggressive and attack? Bring it on A**hole!........ Im not calling you an Ahole, I meant that in reference to the owner of the dog.

Up here I can carry a gun (and do every day) just about any where, and I mean it.......if a dog were to attack any of my children, it would be a dead dog!

And attack a CHILD at that!!

Their apartment was seperated from mine by one wall. Our doors were right beside each other. That dog would jump, growl and bite at the door any time someone came to their door or mine. I showed that to the dog warden and said "Tell me that dog is not vicious!" He apologized and said that his hands were tide since I was the first person to report a bite. When I told the owners that I would feed it a hamburger I told them it would be laced with antifreeze so they could watch their dog bleed like I watched my child bleed. I am not a mean person but there is only so much I can watch my child go through and nothing be done about it. The daily torture of bringing that dog to the bus stop pushed me over my limit and by God I meant every word. I have never though of harming an animal before that one but I swear to you I meant every word of it. That dog was NOT going to harm my child again!

This thread is oddly irritating and entertaining at the same time. I wrote cnn and wrtv, not that it will do anything, but it made me feel better.

I'm going to need to get a bigger snake to go to capital hill.

The most terrifying experience I've had with a dog was with a rottweiler. I went over to a friends house and she had conveniently forgotten to tell me she even had a dog. We walked in, it ran past the two people in front of me that it knew, jumped up and planted it's front feet on my shoulders. I'm 6+ft, it was huge and scary. It then proceeded to plaster my face in spit while it tried to lick me to death. I was mostly scared because this came after a dog actually tried to attack me. That's a long story of a REALLY well trained guard dog that got confused and almost took me out.

I had a very pissed off Rottie try to eat me when I worked at the Humane Society. Our on call guy had picked him up after hours and when I went in at 9 to put animals away from our adoption kiosk he had gotten out of his pen and decided he didnt want me there. OOOOMMMMGGGG I was stuck in between the two sets of glass doors, bracing myself against the doors so they couldn't open. All the while he was jumping on them trying to get me and I'm on the phone with our on call guy frantically screaming at him to get his butt over there and GET THIS DOG BEFORE IT KILLS ME. Scared me to death! But I still have a soft spot for Rotties and Pits, they are misunderstood and judged unfairly.
