Just venting.. We have a local pet store down here named valley pets.... Idiots know nothing, kill everything, horrible store... anyway..

Last year I purchased sold my pet blackthroat monitor to someone on craigslist, he told me he was experienced, that he knew the guys at valley pets. I told him never to treat his monitor like that, because their monitors are DISGUSTINGLY poorly taken care of. I gave him some proper husbandry info, told him a good diet to use ETC... Today I went into valley pets on a whim, because I was bored and looking for some more 6' cages.

Sure enough, my boy had wound up there. In the same cage as their dehydrated malnourished "monster" - the store mascot. He was dehydrated, beyond under fed, and in fact- the first thing my girlfriend asked is "is that lizard dead?". I found pics on my phone of what he used to look like, and found he was the same animal I used to own based on comparing a few markings. He had lost a lot of his weight, all his color was gone, and he was laying limp while monster walked all over him... He managed to move about an inch just so I knew he was at least still a little bit alive....

I'm disgusted that this happened to him. It's repulsive.

They have thankfully decided to sell their big female burmese... Hopefully I can rescue it out of there and find it somewhere decent to live... I'm appalled and will have plenty of words for them tomorrow when I get there.....

They only want $500 for their big burm, but I my hatchlings aren't even out of the egg yet this year, so I can't just buy a rescue case... Apparently it's a mean burm too... grrrrrrrr

If you pay their asking price, in your eyes you will be rescuing the snake, but for them it's just another sale that finances the store. Have you reported them to animal control or to the city licensing agency?

I'd do this too ^^ Same as in the pet shops here, although Irish people know a lot less about reptiles, believe me! There was a boa, gorgeous little baby thing having a lot trouble shedding and had all bits stuck to her with an EMPTY (like bone dry) water bowl beside her.. -_- so I understand the frustration. I contacted the local society for prevention to cruelty to animals and they went in the next morning to have a look... typically water bowl was conveniently just filled as they went in and they did nothing. If I had €250 I would've bought her on the spot!

Our local authorities are a massive joke. I do plan to set up a time to actually do a walk through with DoA and the humane society there. That is in the works, but nothing will come of it, they've been inspected, and looked at, and sadly local authorities are actually too stupid to figure out when a reptile is on deaths door or when a fish is covered in sores from septicemia.....

Normally though, I'd agree with you. I'm pretty good at distancing myself from the animals in the store and letting them die. Here's the kicker though. My entire focus is on large constrictors... They have one, at a low price. They have one, that I've heard from other keepers. Is aggressive. Low price + big snake = some idiot will buy it, and likely end up in the news. As soon as that happens my ability to keep my animals comes under fire. So I'm not just saving that snake, I'm preventing it from ending up endangering my right to keep large constrictors.

Thankfully, that big burm is the last one they have, I've inquired here and there about all the other large stuff, and she is (as I'm told) the last one in the store, and obviously they can't bring in more burms, and they actually want the big snakes out of the shop all together. Hopefully, the owners son is there today and is a little more reasonable. If he wants it gone, I'm more than happy to take it off his hands and find it somewhere to go.

That's where Shivers came from. There is a reason that store is nicknamed "dead pets".

Have you tried trading them some non living things? When I first saw shivers down there I went home, grabbed my roach colony and a bunch of random pet stuff and went back. The owner's son will work with you. The owner won't.

Though they did tell me that it depended on what animal I wanted when I went in to trade.

The guy gave me shivers and said not to tell his dad.

I also called the USDA on them and they don't cover reptiles or something. I called a bunch of local animal groups and got the same reply.

Honestly I hadn't been in there in over a year. After the last time getting into it with someone about monster AGAIN I kinda was fed up with the place. I just happened to be desperate enough for extra cages to decide to see if they had used ones laying around they wanted to sell off.

Sadly- I don't have nearly anything left in terms of "non living". I sold everything off when I moved out except for Charmander, and the only things I have left are all for the retics.

I know lil dave will work with me on some level, but not to the extent he did with shivers, or fluffy for that matter. It would be easy for his dad to overlook one of the corn snakes, or a monitor in a little cage, but the biggest snake they've had in the store for years randomly going missing- he's bound to ask some questions...

The only hope I can manage to figure out is if they are so desperate to get rid of it because of its size/temper that they give it to me for next to nothing, or in trade for feeder rabbits or something... It's sad because there's like... a handful of people who I'd trust with this animal given her temper... Guess we'll find out when I head down there.. I don't even remember when they open LOL

Either way, good luck. I would hope that they are still willing to work with you on it because she's hard to sell.
I always feel bad for that snake when I'm down there.
I was pretty upset when that second monitor showed up in monster's cage a few months back. Is that the one they are calling "monster's girlfriend"? They had them both outside in a rabbit hutch the one time. It was still cold too.

I really wish there was a way to have them shut down.

I think it's perfectly fine to get that snake out of there. She can't be replaced now.
