offensive?

What on earth has this world come to?? The political correctness crap has seriously gone over the top. This is what is wrong with society today.

I agree 100%. At work, we have Computers On Wheels. We can't call them COWs anymore because one nurse asked the other nurse if the COW was in the room and the patient got offended. Now we have to call them WOWs. Workstations. Lame.

I believe that there is a certain type of bitter angry woman who seeks to be offended, just so she can screech about it to anyone who will listen.
I try to avoid people like that like the plague, they are no good for my happy inner being.

The funny thing was that when I was in college, I was in a fraternity that had gone co-ed in the 1960s-but still officially called all members "Brothers". It was a big point of debate every year-and for the most part, the girls didn't care or actually liked it-it was the guys who thought we should be offended.

I still get a newsletter from them a couple of times a year. Guess what is the perennial point of discussion at national conference-20 years later?

From what I've seen, most kids in high school are thrilled to be Freshmen because it means they're a name, not a grade :). And most first year college students are thrilled to be freshmen because it means they're adults.

Nice stereotype there Beth! I can picture her in my mind right now, that bitter middle aged screeching hag.

It seems like there is such a backlash against being "PC" these days, well to me people being annoyed by some women not wanting to be called freshmen, seem just as silly to me as the women themselves. Me, I would rather this than nobody ever having the guts to speak out against something if they find it unfair.
Women's rights have come a long way but there is still a lot of fighting to do before our gender is treated equally. Until then I would rather be amused by someone taking on a windmill or two than never see anybody mustering the guts to speak out or fight against inequality. I am far more annoyed by complacent women who let themselves be pushed around than I am by bitter screeching ones with a cause...

My BIL's girlfriend is all about women's rights? She freaked out when we passed a restaurant called Babe's...didn't matter that it was really named after the blue ox. She's also a PETA nut, so that's like 6 strikes!

At what point is are the words woman and female going to be changed?

I had to stare at the would freshman for a while before I figured out what was "offensive"

I agree on the complacency of some and would far prefer action to inaction. But is being referred to as a freshman really an issue of unfairness or inequality? I guess I fail to see how it has much to do with actual inequity and more to do with placation. Now if they were stating a female doesn’t deserve the title of freshman because they are female or segregating classes based on sex or assigning tasks based on sex or if some gov form held over from the 1800s refers to women as those that are not allowed to vote or something akin (the list is endless) the inequality issue is in play.

Being PC just for PC sake though reminds me of the boy who cried wolf. When the actual wolf appears or a serious inequality issue arises doesn't it have a watering down effect when it matters most if every word is overly scrutinized? Isn't curtailing the first amendment more offensive than being referred to as a freshman?

I understand there are some words and/or their use that need changing. I don't want to broad brush that all PC is bad. I am not trying to be facetious I truly want to understand how much of the PC today helps society much more than, as Bethany said, making a complainer feel good. :shrugs:

She sounds like a real fun person to be around!

This was actually my thought too but much better worded than anything I might have come up with.

Some people just need to get over themselves... I sometimes call my female friends "bros" even though we're all chicks. Nobody gets offended. A wo-man is still a hu-man so I don't get why they can't still be called freshmen.

Pfffffffffffffffffffffff....................I am very hard to offend...I could care less being called a "freshman" or whatever else. I find that more and more, people (male and female) are offended by more and more stupid !@#$$%...kind of boggles the mind really. Did anyone here hear about the JCPenny "Hitler" T-pot thing?
