Brumation

Is there a good guide line to brumation, kinda like a week to week list of what to do and what time of the year?

It's probably still to early but I like to be prepared.

I'm on the east coast (NYC) I clean my snakes out for 3 weeks starting from the 2nd week in November then put them down end of first week in December and bring them up feb 8th. I keep my kings on that same schedule and have 0 problems.

I never do and the breedings go fine. I guess it boils down to personal preference. I had one breeding this year in January.

see if I can do without brumation then I will, much easier for me....my only concern is that I wil only have one pair breeding, so one shot at babies for 2014. just don't want to screw it up.

On the other side, I did read something about them being able to have 2 clutches a year, does that mean that if they fail in the beginning of the year that I can let them try later?

Sometimes it works that way and sometimes it doesn't. My best advice to you is to make sure your female is up to weight and healthy. Then I put my pairs together every Sunday until I get a lock. My corns started in January but with the majority of them breeding in Feb. and March. Corns are fairly easy to breed so I wouldn't let it get you too worked up.

ok, so how often and how much should I feed the male and female before they are ready to mate (female of course needs to eat a lot more)

Not here. The corns really don't need it to trigger the breeding. I watch my breeders and if they start acting antsy or more than normal I see if they are ready. Usually the males are ready way before the females. With putting them together every Sunday I usually don't miss a lock. As with all things there are exceptions, I did have one female refuse to breed all last season, but I think it might have stemmed with her problems last year laying out.

I feed them on a normal feeding schedule. I do feed rats to my females to get them ready. But that is just me and not all agree with it saying rats have too much fat. That is the thing with breeding corns, not everyone does everything the same way. Does not make one thing more right or wrong than the other. Just how one prefers to do it.

ok, so if I just keep feeding 1 adult mouse every 10 days (thats what I do now) then my female should be fine by the time the mating starts?

I just start putting them together every Sunday after the first shed of the new year. I had worse fertility the year I brumated. But I'm in Florida, so I couldn't get them cooler than 65ish. I hated it. I only did it one year.

see i'm in canada, not really sure how much of a temp difference I'll get during the winter. we do use air conditioning during the summer, so the difference might not be to much.
I guess I really have to start paying attention to the temperature this year.

The biggest thing you need to do is make sure the female is 3 years old, around 3 feet long and over 300 grams. I like my females to be closer to 400 grams. Make sure she looks healthy and is not skinny.

Nope three is the minimum most go by, it is much better on the female because she is larger and mature by then. A young female will give you nothing but problems. Egg binding being the biggest problem.
