They Are Coming!!!
I'm a Machinist. I make Cutting tools. Generally a rather boring experience.

But occasionally, you get asked to do something fun.

The following is what happens when you ask a bunch of guys to make a Gun Brake for a 1930-1940's russian rifle.

I don't know much about the Rifles themselves....So please enlighten me.

First are the Pictures of the original (Black Oxide coated). And the 400 or so that I got to make.

WW2 era Russian rifles would probably be Mosin-Nagants. I have a couple. A few years ago, you could pick them up for $75 bucks. They are single shot bolt action rifles that fire an odd caliber that I don't think anyone makes, 7.62X54. But there is so much old surplus ammo, that you can buy it dirt cheap. The rounds are huge, and a bullet looks like it belongs under the wing of an airplane, and they kick like a mule. I bet your ears are still ringing! The Movie "Enemy at the Gate" featured these rifles prominently.

I could be wrong, though. That's just the most popular Russian rifle from that era, and in the videos, I didn't get a close up look, but they look to be Mosins.

Precisely Correct on ALL counts Chip!!! They were used in the movie as you mentioned....and they do kick like a Son-of-a-Gun.

As for the Ears....Nah..... Playing in a metal Band during my teen- early twenties took care of those.

I'm Suprised by the profound effect the Brake had on the amount of Kick. With the Brake, the tip of the barrel barely lifted. Without.....much much different.

Did you notice the Bayonet? Folded back on the barrel?
 
Who else posts on Arfcom? I was given this site as a reference by a member when looking for info on getting my first snake.
 
How loud are the brakes? I want my AK to be louder, with a larger muzzle flash.

Currently I have an AK74 muzzle brake on, but more flame and noise is better. My AK is a range toy.

But if you want more flash..more Kick...More Noise...

Buy a bigger gun?

Muzzle brakes tend to throw the muzzle blast laterally from the end of the barrel, so subjectively it will seem louder to bystanders.

If you want louder and more muzzle blast (why exactly escapes me...) then reload you own ammo with lighter bullets and/or slower burning powder.

But excessive muzzle flash means powder burning when it is leaving the barrel, which really isn't all that good of a thing to be happening.

Bear in mind that scopes, unless made specifically to hold up on a muzzle braked gun, are often quickly destroyed by the push-pull action of a muzzle brake.

Gotta love the steel butt plate on a rifle from the late 1800s early 1900s. I have a 91/30 and an M44 (the carbine you were shooting). How well did your brake perform?

Did a wonderful job. The kick was markedly less noticeable.
 
Am I assuming correct that it latches around the front sight like the bayonet does but also has a set screw?

edit: I should clarify the 91/30 bayonet latches around the front sight.

Yes.... Rotates into a notch... Around the front sight.... And is fastened with 2 10/32 set screws.

The gun I was shooting was equipped with a bayonet as well... It just folds back against the barrel
 
I understand that.... There is a "store" here that will sell me this rifle plus 1000 rnds for $200 or so. May have to look into this.

Yep that's the M44 carbine. Did you make those for a retailer?

My two. The top in pic is the M44 and bottom is the 91/30.

Man, I DO wish your video didn't have the coolant spray obscuring the cutting. I find myself spending more and more time on YouTube just watching people transmuting metal bars and rods into swarf. When I get my new lathe, I'm going to have this darn nice new hammer looking for unsuspecting nails to pound.... :grin01:
