Meet Loki (black milk snake) and another bit of exciting news!

I held an adult black milk snake about a year ago and really liked it, but after I got my Pueblan and was introduced to all of that musking, I didn't want to get another musk machine (though he is getting better). Later, I found the really lengthy black milk snake thread on these forums and read about their calm temperaments and had to give them a second look.

Loki was meant to be a "reward" for reaching a fitness goal, and I am just about there, and my husband told me that I could get him a little early, in time for Christmas. I picked him up today from the breeder where I got 2 of my other snakes (Milkshake the Pueblan and Sherlock the Cal king).

He is so calm and curious! I am really excited to see him in his adult form. My daughter and husband suggested the name "Loki" - which is fine by me because that's my favorite character in Marvel's Thor/Avengers movies. After researching it, I think it's a fitting name for a snake that'll be so dark.

Merry Christmas to me! In other exciting news, we bought a house 2 days ago and I am SO excited to explore the property (35 acres with a creek and pond) and see what kind of herps we will find. It's not far from here, so I know there will be garters (and I did already find 2 leopard frogs in the sump pump in the basement, which we rescued). We won't move in for a few months, and then of course it'll be awhile before all the cold and snow goes away, but when it does, we will be all over the woods and fields to see what we can find. Another plus is that the house is much bigger, and I am going to have my husband build some display cages instead of going with the rack idea that we originally planned on when the reached adult sizes, since we'll definitely have the space for some nice displays.

How exciting! Congratulations on the house and the MBM!!

Thank you! :)

Here is a wintry picture I took of the beginning of the driveway. Beyond what you can see here, the driveway snakes (lol) around through the woods and down a hill and around to the house; it's pretty long! It's my dream driveway. :)

Do you have a pick-up or a tractor with a plow? You'll need one!

We have a 4WD pickup and have been researching plows now! We live in town and just shovel when we need to, which has been quite a bit so far this winter.

Great looking snake! Congrats on him and the new house!

Thank you! My son looked in the bag and said, "Mom ... he has red and yellow. Did you get tricked?" I guess he hasn't been listening to me talk about them!

Awesome Snakie!!! I sooooo want one!! :)

And Huge Congrats on the house/acreage !!! :dancer:

I love my black milk baby, he's really chill, his name is Angus. Your baby is super cute, I like the stripe that took a detour. Congrats on the house too :)

He has a few of those detoured stripes! :) How old is Angus? My little guy is so chill, too. He doesn't even try to get away when I pick him up.

Very nice addition, congrats on Loki and the new home.

Thank you!!

Congrats on both purchases.

Thank you. I am hopeful that I'll find a lot of herps at the new place, though my pictures won't be as stunning as yours.

Nice addition and congrats on the house :)

Thanks! How is Ridley doing?

I attached another picture of Loki and this picture at the house, taken from the dining room, on Christmas day. It is so peaceful out there.

Ridley is doing great! He's almost doubled in size. He shed last week and noticeably darker, especially compared to your little one :)

How exciting! Congratulations on the house and the MBM!!

MBM? That's not a Mexican black king, it's a L. t. gaigeae. Black milks are from montane Costa Rica (and Panama, I recall reading). Fairly similar snakes, but MBKs are much smaller, and hatch much blacker.

Congrats! I've been tossing around the idea of getting a MBM or a black king...I haven't owned either species. Are these guys more mellow than the MBM?

I've owned several over the years and never had or hatched a nervous one. You keep them off heat if your house is warm, and they are slow and chill. I have had a couple with strong feeding responses, but the pair I have now won't even eat in front of you -let alone a separate container. As close to zero bite risk as you're going to get, even when blue, I hand them to kids without thinking about it.

They are bigger than the average king or corn, so do need some space. They don't seem to be climbers.

^Gorgeous!

Mine has bitten once when he was younger. He was in blue and I tried handling him. It didn't hurt at all. Ridley is a poop slinger though. He was very jumpy and nervous when I got him. But he's calmed down a lot and hasn't slung any poop my way in a while. During the winter I have to have a heating pad on him but I keep it in the low 70s. In the summer I use no heat.

Very nice Spyderk, and Chip did not know you had black milks, if you ever breed them let the class know please :). Love big milk snakes, just saw a pic of a Honduran that was one inch shy of 8 feet.
