Boa or python ?

I would love to have a boa but my husband would freak. I use to work at a pet store and I fed all the snakes and worked with them. The ball pythons were extremely frustrating to feed them and I found them boring when I handled them. The red tails on the other hand were great. They always ate and were active and curious when I had them out. Plus the morphs are amazing. I would love to have one just like Joba has :)

haha. If you get a male BCI (not BCC), and don't go crazy feeding him, you should end up with a 6 footer and not too much girth. My hypo guy is about 1.5 years old now and approaching 400g. He's awesome. (I just got the albino girl, and I'm preparing for an 8+ footer with her). I'd maybe suggest a Dumerils boa, which stay in the 5-6 foot range (Kathy Love has a gorgeous BIG female!) and are stunningly beautiful (and naturally occurring), but I've had nothing but trouble with my dum rarely eating for me.

Some of the island species, such as the Hogg Island, are great and stay a bit smaller, too. Also, there are the Brazilian Rainbow Boas. Very pretty and not as big. I think they need lots of humidity though.

Go with the male BCI; your hubby will fall in love with him. ;)

Wats the average size of a red tail boa ?

Keep in mind, these are not guaranteed!!

Males: 6-7 feet, usually
Females: 7-10 feet (15-25 lbs. or so for weight) (10 footers are rare, but possible.)

Be careful, that's for BCI (typically, Columbian). BCC (Surinam, or Guyana) get bigger!

Wat does BCO and BCC mean lol ?

BCC (boa constrictor constrictor) are true red tails (so they say), from Guyana and Suriname and get a fair bit bigger than BCI (boa constrictor imperator). Most red tails you see for sale are BCI, but everyone still calls them red tails (and rightfully so, IMO). Like I said, if you're concerned about size, many Central American and/or island species of boas stay on the smaller size.

Thanks joba im just trying to know more about snakes as i only got my first snake two weeks ago lol

Yes. Flexwatt. You can have it installed when you order. You also may want to check out Boaphile and Animal Plastics.

It's ok; I love talking boas. But soon I'm going out to enjoy our Arizona weather!! There are a few Rosy Boa owners on here. There are several different types of Rosies, if I'm not mistaken. I don't really know anything about them. You probably wouldn't need a 4X2 cage for a rosy. I'm off to do some hiking. If you PM me your email address, I can send you a pdf of a really good boa (bci and bcc) care manual.

Do the BCI boas have many morphs? I'm in love with the albino sunglows.

While the info is not entirely incorrect, it is not entirely complete.

Boa Constrictor is actually a complex of several subspecies, the most common of which is BCI- AKA, Boa Constrictor Imperator. There are also BCC, BCA, BCO and others.

Now, within each sub-species, there are also localities, which effect to lesser or greater degrees on how the Boa looks.

Though usually by BCI, one means "Colombian Boa", which is the locale from which most morphs arrived, there are many options in truth, and the size and color of the animal varies greatly between the commonly available localities.

I suggest you look into the different options.

As for BCI morphs- yes, this subspecies by far has the most morphs out of the BC complex, including Sunglows which really aren't expansive nowdays.

This is my favorite pure locality BCL or Peruvian long tail boa he is a sweet heart of a snake and will max out at 6.5 feet or so he is about 6 now.

The BCL is a lower temp more humidity local I give them a 85 degree hot spot and a range 82-75 day and 78-72 night temp but 50% humidity or so
