pet stores are stupid.

Back in Pueblo there was a pet store where I would go get mice. The guy who ran it was extremely knowledgeable and him and his daughter really cared for their animals. So yesterday when driving home from work I was excited to see a little mom and pop pet store a few blocks from my new apartment with a sign saying they specialized in fish and reptiles. So I just walked over there. And the guy working is sitting outside smoking a cigarette so I'm browsing and notice a retic in a fifteen gallon viv. I don't really know about how they shed it looked like it was having a horrible time. I thought it was a baby. Then I noticed they wanted 100 dollars for normal beardy babies and their fish room was in no way adequate to keep the temps right. There was like a three inch gap under the door with daylight dining through it. This is the mountains man! Those fish are all going to freeze in like three months.
Back to the retic baby. The guy comes back in and I ask him how old it is and he tells me 3 years. 3 years! The poor thing looked barely six feet long. I'm amazed it's alive. So if anyone in the four corners area is looking for a retic please save this guy.

Aw, that's too bad. He may have been incorrect about the age of the retic, though. As poor as the conditions are, I hope no one gives that store money for the snake.

And someone buying that retic "to save it" will just profit the neglectful shopkeeper so he can do it to another one. Please, never buy an animal to rescue it and profit those who neglect them over those who do a good job.

If I saw an animal kept in a cage too small I would call the ASPCA and report them. Tell them everything you observed, and take pics if you can. Hopefully the ASPCA can step in, confiscate the animals in need and can be put up for adoption. Otherwise, they will give him a 3 day compliance notice to fix it to where tanks and conditions are best for the animals.

Crazy how little people know about pets when they work at or even own a pet store!

Trust me, I have tried and tried and tried to report the local pet store. They DO NOT care.

Not true, I do animal rescues and have been on plenty with the ASPCA where we got tanks after tanks of unkempt reptiles and fish, as well as furry animals.

Unfortunately the ASPCA only cares about cats and dogs, not fish and snakes :(

What ASPCA do YOU call?? I have been on the phone with them more than I can count and each time it's just "We don't respond to calls like that", or "Sorry, we don't do reptiles" or "call USDA", or any number of other excuses. NO ONE has EVER responded to my calls or emails regarding the local store. ever. If it doesn't involve the warm fuzzies, they do not care.

The Phoenix ASPCA, and if they can't do it they call the specialists in. The she "Animal Cops Phoenix" was filmed from their central location, that is how I got on board with them.
