Hypo Mahogany - interesting and different phenotypic variation in all three.

Thanks for looking!

Great looking snakes Orlando! My Mahoganies are the same. Extreme Variation with them. It'll be interesting to see what happens from Kastanie X Mahogany this season!

Steve,
I look forward to the outcome. It should be exciting!

Take care!

Well I have to be honest, I have not followed the "Mahogony" very much at all. Last I read anything about it was that they were thought to possibly be Kastanie.

I take it that has not been proven as of yet?? Also, not sure if they are all like this, but I find the Mahogony pictured here to look like a typical corn possibly displaying the redcoat/redfactor trait..........it that possible ??

If so, could that explain the variations in the Hypo forms ???

Walter
:crazy02:BOUT' CORNS !!

I've recently been wondering if Mahogany isn't Dominant??

I say this because I have some that "look" like Classic corns. The person I got them from swear they are coming from Mahogany breedings. I also spoke to one of the people that got in on the Mahoganies first and they told me 2 years ago they thought it could be a Dominant gene, because when bred to a Ghost Corn some of the F1s came out Mahogany. I thought they were pulling my chain, but now I'm seriously reconsidering their thoughts!!

Walter,
Good point! I have been thinking the same thing. I am still waiting for Steve to pull the trigger...:fullauto: Can't wait to see the results…

Take care!

"hmmm interesting"…….. The breeding I did this year with the male mahogany paired with a WC swamp green yielded all classic corns but after a few sheds some of them are turning out to be mahogany-like. I will post picture sometime soon.

Thanks for the info!

Ok very interesting indeed. I'm wondering if people are getting confused not thinking about a Dominant gene in the equation? This would make sense. They might be thinking, well I bred Mahoganies together so they are automatically all Mahoganies, thinking it's recessive not Dominant. That's why we might be getting "Mahoganies that look like Classics. They could be just Classics!??

It would be interesting (well, I guess to someone like me) if mahogany did turn out to be allelic to kastanie yet, unlike kastanie, dominant to wild type. Which brings me back to Steve's result showing that kastanie and sunrise are at least allelic if not the same mutation. He got some mandarin looking offspring that matured to look more like sunrise. It's likely that the variation between sunrise and kastanie is due to locality effects, but another intriguing possibility would be that kastanie and sunrise could be allelic, recessive to wild type, and incomplete dominant to each other (breeding those mandarin-sunrise clutchmates together could sort that out). It seems unlikely based on probability alone that we would have 3 different mutations at the same locus, but hey, look at the hypo locus.

Of course, all of this is coming from someone that hasn't hatched a single corn snake :dunce:

My Kastanie X Christmas Hypo Mahogany might be a waste if the Christmas Hypo Mahogany isn't actually a Mahogany :(

I hope they are what you think they are. That sounds like it could be a pretty neat looking morph. Have you posted any pics of them here before? I did a search but didn't find any.

my 2 cents

Orlando- Lee and I were just talking about this very thing. From my groups results; I think your first one pictured is a norm het mahog. I have two girls that look exactly like yours, with the rich red bleeding through. I'll post pix of how I have mine identified. I could be totally wrong, but just my 2 cents. Yours look super nice btw.

Steve- I still owe you a male. You keep avoiding me in Tampa.lol

Jeff,

Thanks for the info! I would love to see pictures. I just think he looks so different when compare to a normal + I was questioning the similarities from his phenotypic variation to a Kastanie. I just need to look at pictures in order to see the differences. You can also send them to

Jeff,
Would you say that this is more of the typical look for a Mahogany? She is a sibling to the male (1st picture).

Let me know and I look forward to your pictures...

Take care!

I have a possible mahogany I am testing out next season with one of John's kastanie bloodreds. She looks just like that snake in the OP. As a hatchling she looked just like a typical kastanie but turned into a beautiful red adult. This whole variety between mahogany/kastanie/copper is very fascinating to me!
