Temperature probes and what to believe...

I have all of my guys on UTH hooked to a hydrofram thermostat. I have double checked the temps with a digital probe and they matched up. I decieded to get sophisticated and bought an infrared temp gun from temp gun .com and got the PE1. It is supposed to be accurate. I have checked and double checked against the thermostat and the temp gun is saying about 5-10 degrees below what the thermostat says. so...I upped the thermostat thinking the temp gun is more accurate. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Both the thermometer and the temp gun should have a rating stating how accurate they are. Can you test the temp gun on a known temperature? The thing with a temp gun is, you can shoot spots all over the UTH, and get different readings, due to the location of the wires.

What temp are you trying for, with the temp gun?

I don't see that model # for sale on their site. Most gun's have a 2 +/- degree accuracy. Add that to the 2 +/- of the hydrofarm thermostat then they are either cancelling each other out or possibly be 4 +/- off ! Also most guns read in a cone shape and the further away you are the less accurate it is. On top of all that guns read surface temps and probes read air temps. Throw some aspen on top of the probe and now your reading trapped air temps. Put a hide on top of the aspen over the probe and your creating even hotter temps.
IMO go by the hydrofarm and digital probes and use the gun for spot checking heat gradients.

To check the guns accuracy submerge your digital therm probe in water and let it sit till the reading stops fluctuating then read the water temp with the gun.

Sorry it's actually called the TG1. website says +- 2 accuracy. They changed the name recently, I think. I'm just trying to get a good read for the warm side. Aiming at mid 80s. When I moved the aspen away and shot it in the same area of the temp probes I got 84 when the thermostat was saying 90. On top of the aspen...under the warm hide I'm getting 75ish. Cool side consistent at 70. Tried your water trick and the cheap probe said 68.5 and the gun said 67.4. So pretty close. I guess my question in all this is, Should I raise the temp on the warm side so that its warmer on top of the aspen?

All this is pretty much mute anyway since they are in their hammocks 90% of the time anyway! :)

All I care about is what is the temp in the middle of the UTH, under the aspen. The snake can burrow right down to it, or go up if he's too warm, or move away completely. I like to set it at 86 for babies.

*Sigh* I don't think it's deadly crucial, all this panic for the exact temperature. If the thermometers probe is saying °85-°90 it's all good. Done.

There is no panic here. Just a simple question. Geez

I'm sorry I didn't aim that towards you, at all. I could see how all this heating stuff seems confusing. People make it seem much more complicated than it should be. Get a uth a thermometer with a probe and a dimmer/rheostat and set it between °85-°90.

Advice here on this site is almost always given to new corn snake owners with baby snakes hence why we try to be precise with the info to get them off on the right path. Of course even setting most thermostats and dimmers to a specific recommended temp there will be fluctuations. Setting at 86 will cut down a much broader possible variance from suggesting a variance in the first place.

All that being said, I hear yeah :)

No worries...That's what I've done too. Just having fun playing with the temp gun and noticed a big difference in the temps. My analytical mind wanted to figure it out. lol! Thanks all!
