My New Hypo! First time snake owner and first snake...not sure if male or female but the tail, after the vent, is longer than the other tank mates. I've seen people pop before but I'm not going to be trying it anytime soon.

What a great little corn! Very good looking. Congratulations!

I'm in the same boat as you. I have no experience at it, so trying to sex it myself is out of the question. I call mine a he and think of him as a boy even though I named him Dolly. It was just the name that came to me so it stuck.

Do you have a name yet? Do you know weight or length? I can tell he's still a youngster, but it is hard to guess further than that.

I wish that you enjoy having your corn as much as I do mine (which is hugely).

Thanks so much! I originally thought he was a she or what ever and named her Amelia Pond (we're huge Dr. Who fans :/). Since we now think it's a boy Capt Jack Harkness (again Dr Who...)

I'm ordering my kitchen scale tonight to start weighing him. He's about 3 months old at this point and is up to the large pinkies. About to order a bulk of 50 from Rodent Pro. $29 flat rate shipping and have only heard great things about them.

Nice names. I admit I'm not into Dr. Who, but my family is :)

Only having one snake I haven't mail ordered mice yet, but I've heard good about RP, too. 50 of one type are too many for me at this time. I went through 26 pinkies (12 small and 10 large) for Dolly, to go from about 12 to 27 grams. and Wednesday night he gets his first fuzzie. I've got 10 of those on hand.

But enough about my baby, keep us posted about your snake! He looks awesome.

Awesome! I'm excited to be a part of this group! A ton of info available. The thing I'm not sure about is how much I should feed him...one time he took a large pinkie and a small one and didn't regurgitate any of it. The last time he took a large one and seemed happy.

Here's what I and many here use as a guide:

"The Munson Plan

-When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 4-5 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (24-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+)
-Jumbo Adults (40-50g) every 7-x days (Snake = 400g+)

Note: Adult females are fed more frequently than adult males (especially following brumation). Females are fed every 6-8 days; males are fed every 7-14 days.

This is by no means scientific."

I never feed closer than 5 days. It is fine to wait until the middle of the weight range to size up.

Also, many here never feed Jumbo Adult mice. I haven't gotten anywhere near there!

Congratulations! I love that you call him your best friend. LOL. Mine are my obsession!

The munson feeding plan will help you know how much to feed him. I wish a had a link for one, but a quick google search will bring you right to it. I feed a little more conservatively than it recommends because I'm not trying to grow my snakes quickly for breeding, but it's a really good starting point.

You may also want to do some reading on keeping snakes together in one cage. It's called cohabitating (so you know what to search for), and there's LOTS of information on it on here. There are risks involved, which you may want to be aware of so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not you want to keep your baby with cagemates, especially if they are not all the same size, and if you don't know the gender. A quick rundown would include cannibalism, stress leading to illness, possibility of spreading illness to other cagemates (or at the very least, not knowing which one is sick), early pregnancy... etc. Again, there are people who do it, but you want to make an informed decision about it, and have the information on how to make sure you have your best chance of success with it. I'd personally love to do it, but after reading up on it, I decided not to. I just decided the risks weren't worth it for me.

You'll find tons of information and support here about this stuff and everything else that could possibly come up. :) Welcome!

Edit** DollysMom beat me to the Munson Plan. :)

This is the feeding plan I made for myself. I took the Munson plan as a baseline and read a ton of comments on here before altering mine.

Feeding Plan*
Snake Weight (g) Feeder Weight (g) Feeder Common Name Frequency (days)
< 15g 2 - 3 single pinks 5
16 - 28 3 (x2) double pinks 5
29 - 35 5 - 7 small fuzzy 5 - 6
36 - 55 7 - 9 regular fuzzy 7
56 - 95 9 - 12 hoppers 7
96 - 175 14 - 20 weaned 7
176 - 300 20 - 25 adult 14
300 - 500 25 - 30 adult 14
> 500g 30 - 35 jumbo adult 14

*do not feed while in blue (shedding)

Geez I thought the first one didn't go through -__- sorry about the double comments lol

Just curious, how do you know it's a hypo? Like, what are the characteristics involved in him being a hypo?

Wow excellent info!

Yeah I only have the one corn. Was referring to his/her cage mates where I got him. I do not plan on cohabitation or breeding.

In regards to the Hypo, I posted in another section and they identified it as either a lava or a hypo...I honestly have no clue :))

So I weighed my little guy today and he weighs a whooping 16g!!!! So I will start him on double pinkies next feed and keep him at 4-5 day feeds.

Noticed he's been a bit lethargic recently, not his normal self. He's due for a good shed any time now. Got him the 3 in 1 cave shelter with the (can't spell or say the word) moss. He noticed it earlier and crawled in there and dug a hole and hasn't come out since. Nice and humid in there so that may be what he was looking for?

Anyways, your info has been amazing! Thanks to you all!

Sphagnum moss. Sph is pronounced like sf. If your mouth won't do sf then you can fake it with sv. First part rhymes with rag. Last part rhymes with rum.

Hiding and resting alot behavior is entirely normal when getting ready to shed.

Good deal! Thanks DollysMom! Put the new 3 in 1 reprise later in today with the Sphagnum moss and he crawled right in without hesitation. Was a bit worried about his temp getting too low but realize that they self regulate temp with the hot and cold side of the viv. Just pulled him out and he is super hazy on his body and underbelly. Eyes never have gotten cloudy or "blue" as some refer to it. However he is definitely looking much better after the reptishelter was put in.

Anyone hear anything bad about those hides?

GREAT names! I'm a huge Whovian, and I have a vanishing stripe anery female named Madame Vastra, and a Giant African Bullfrog male named Strax. :)

Also, if you have any reptile specialty stores in your area, a lot of them will sex your snake for you if you bring it in. I know the one in my city does. :)

Thank you, I love those names too! I love the Stormagedon name, just haven't had a pet that it fits yet, lol. I love my geeky names, I also have another corn named Trillian, one named Sif, and another named Kaa. :)
