About South Mountain Reptiles

You should have no worries ordering from Don at SMR or Rich here at SerpenCo or Kathy Love at Cornutopia. Or quite a number of private hobby breeders here as well. :)

If you ever wonder about a seller's business reputation, you can research them on the Fauna Classified Board of Inquiry.

You can find nearly everyone there, from small re-sellers to huge breeders. I've changed my mind on a couple sales based on what I've read there, and everyone I've bought from who had an excellent reputation has turned out to be wonderful to deal with myself.

Some breeders' websites even have an icon denoting them as BOI Certified Good Guys, which means a public inquiry process was held and no bad experiences or complaints were turned up.

I believe you have to be registered with FC and signed in to do a search.

I'd be amazed if you turned up a bad report about Don. His cornsnake book is excellent, too.

I came across this South Mountain Reptiles
Has anyone bought any corns from them? They have some beautiful morphs but I'm usually a bit skittish about buying stuff online.

I'd be nervous about buying a snake that I couldn't see a picture of the actual specimen I was buying, no matter the breeder's reputation. But that is just me. I look at snakes for sale, and wish I could buy them, wish I could buy them, then either I do break down and buy them or they get sold to someone else!

But some breeders produce hundreds and hundreds of babies, and it would be impossible for them to photograph every single hatchling, much less keep up with who was later sold.

Don's a great guy, and he has a guarantee on his snakes. If you don't like the way they look after 7 months, you can send it back and he'll replace it with another or something equal in value assuming the snake you send him is healthy as determined by his vet.

Don produces thousands of snakes. He told me recently that he had about 4,000. Even so, he always takes the time to answer questions and return messages. When I've asked in the past, he has sent pictures of individual snakes that were not posted on his site. I can think of no reason that should keep someone from doing business with him.

My comment about not buying a snake I couldn't see wasn't directed at Don personally- just any generic snake out there. I know Don's snakes are gorgeous- I've seen them here!

I agree. From small breeders, I, like Nanci, like to see images. That can't be expected of LARGE/honest breeders like Don/Rich/Company, and I TRUST those guys. If I am one of the first on the list, they are gonna send the best to you that you pay for. They probably can pick out a better one (from their experience) than I could from an image, anyway.

Don is one of the few truly GOOD people in this world. Forget snakes - he is a good person. I'm usually shamed of myself because I know I can never be as nice as Don if I WORKED at it as Don is to strangers naturally. What else can be said? He's a great person.

Now, as far as snakes, he one of the the 3 best cornsnake breeders in the nation. No doubt in my mind. (Obviously, Rich is one of the other 2!) Many animals in my collection have "Source: Don/SMR" written on their tags. Can anything better be said?

If you have ANY doubts, email/call Don and TALK to him. Ask any questions or state any concerns you have. Be ready to spend, though, because you'll feel comfortable buying from him after you make that short contact attempt!

Having met Don personally - I can second everyone's replies here. He is one of the honest to goodness good guys in this world. He produces amazing snakes, writes fantastic books about the care of cornsnakes and is willing to talk to people directly to alleviate any concerns.
If I had the cash - I would buy a ton of snakes from Don!!

If you had the cash, you would own all the snakes in the world!!:sidestep::roflmao::dancer:

I got to see Katie buy snakes sight unseen from Lee Abbott. Lee had personally picked out a snake, and an alternate, and then recommended to her which he thought would be the best. They want you to have the best there is. Well, except for the keepers! :)

:laugh01:If I had the cash...and the time and the space...I probably would!!
What can I say - in less than two years I have gone from wanting one as a pet - to owning 47 with future breeding plans!

Lee is another one of those honest to goodness good guys too. I knew I could trust him just like you can trust Don.

I [icked up a pair of female pewters from Don that are outstanding. He is a pleasure to do business with and has top quality animals.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. :)

I have purchased 3 corns from Don, and all of them have been stellar examples of the morphs I have seen. He is so patient, and will definitely work with you to find the snake you want!!

Ditto to what all of them have said! I recently purchased my first corn from Don and he's an absolute darling. He eats beautifully, his coloring and patterns are just gorgeous.

I was a nervous first-timer and I emailed Don quite a few times asking questions on the shipping, payment, etc, etc and he was always very polite (and that there was no need to keep apologizing. XD;; ) and answered everything.

A+ for the service, animal and the man.

It's so wonderful to hear that there are still people like that out there. I did see the warranty but you know what people always say, "it's too good to be true." That's probably what got me started thinking in the first place.
Thank you guys so much for the feedbacks on this thread. I'll be contacting him soon, hope he still has the ones I want in stock. :p

Well, I don't call Don a darling, but he is kinda cute. OH, you mean the SNAKE! LOL.....

If the animal's healthy, Don is serious. I was at a herp show and a guy brought in one of the best looking Okeetees (this was before Don was improving on the Abbott's line - I had never even heard of Lee way back then) I've ever seen. The black borders were "average" for that day and time. The colors were amazing. I loved it. The guy told Don that the snake wasn't quite what he wanted (borders not thick enough). Don let him pick a new one off the table, made it right with the guy, and took the snake he didn't want back. Don honors that guarantee. I've seen it with my own two eyes at the ETHS show. I doubt many ever get tempted to take him up on it, though. His animals are NICE looking. They are usually turn out so good that almost nobody ever wants to deal with the hassle of paying shipping to get rid of such a good looking snake that they already have! Know what I mean?

While I'm sure Don is adorable in his own right, my personal tastes won't allow me to discrimminate, Lol. But yes. Shredder is an absolutely fluffball (figuratively speaking, of course) and GORGEOUS to boot.

I've heard good things about Don. Yeeeessss.

To Echo Nanci, though, what'cha looking for?

I have a number of snakes that I bought from Don directly, and a few others that he produced. Awesome snakes, and dealing with Don is always a pleasure. He's one of these guys to whom you might say "send me your best morphX", and he'll take it as a personal obligation to send you something that'll blow you away. I don't recommend calling him to bug him all the time, but he's also an amazing guy to have a conversation with. :)
