New Arrivals: 1.1 Isla de Maize Boas (BCI)

Esteban and Consuela arrived this morning from Gus Rentfro of Rio Bravo Reptiles. Gus was great to work with, and very professional. I couldn't be happier with these guys. They were in a darkish phase out of the box, but started lightening up the longer I had them out. Unfortunately, I had to go to work, so I couldn't mess with them for as long as I would have liked.

They are '07s, and the male weighs 93g and the female weighs 111g. :)

They are such amazing wee boas huh! Your pair are lovely, the female is very similar to mine. Just wait till they get into light phase and the aqua colours show up.

I'm so pleased you have boidy class Dean!

Thanks Susan and Katie! :D

They sure are! I can't wait to see the full range of their coloration. These ended up being a little bigger than I had expected. I had 16qt Sterilites set up for them, but I'll probably switch them to 66qt tubs VERY soon.

It'll be difficult to keep my hands off these guys when I get back home from work tonight. :)

My two took 5 months to start feeding properly which is common for this locale. My male, Beaux is growing MUCH faster than Clementine which is odd, but he has an insane feeding response.

One again huge contrats. You will enjoy these soooo much!

Awesome!! How big do they max out size wise? I'd love to add a pair of boas to the collection, but don't want to mess with 8ft giants...

These are a true dwarf locality, usually maxing out at around 5ft for females and 3-4ft for males. Get a pair, you won't be disapointed!

Ok, I would like a male in a few years. That can be my one boid. I love pink snakes! How do they compare to your other pair of boas- are they a lot different or just a little?

They are a lot different in terms of appearance. I haven't had them long enough to compare behavior, but these seem MUCH more active than the female Bluefields BCI I have or the male my sister keeps for me.

At the White Plains NY show I spoke with Vin Russo, who is "the man" when it comes to boas. I explained to him the situation with my female Bluefields. She just doesn't really grow, and it's not just a matter of being a dwarf BCI. He explained that the Bluefields are practically WC, being "farm raised". He's pretty sure my female is heavily parasitized. I'm going to bring a fecal into a vet soon and see about getting her on the right track. The male Bluefields is actually growing fairly well, but I'll probably have to get him tested and possibly treated as well. Thankfully these new boas are captive born.

Very nice....

so when are you getting a burm?? ;)
Thanks Jim. There probably won't be a Burm in my future. I'm really not even interested in non-dwarf BCIs. Space is VERY limited. :(

Now Dean all you need are some Longicauda and some Pacific boas!
I really like the Longicaudas and some of the Pacifics, but I'm done for now. ;)

Thanks. :)

I've heard that term, farm-raised, in reference to uromastyxes.

Well, deworming a snake is no big deal, even for the snake.
Mine never were upset by it or stopped feeding, though their
feeding day was typically two days after the deworming.
Jake took two rounds, but everyone else cleared up in one round
of four dewormings with Panacur. My vet reweighs at each visit
for an accurate dosage according to the snake's weight.
Addy needed two shots because she had some other
parasite that the Panacur couldn't kill.

You just wanted these boas because they're from CORN ISLAND, didn't you??

Sorry...

But seriously, you need to stop getting these amazing, and small snakes that keep making me want another. It's been over a year since I last brought a new snake home...and I was doing so so good! But then you start posting these gemlike blue garters, and these beautiful little boas... why, it's just not fair! (allthough my heart still belongs to rubber boas... if I ever find one, that is!).

Nice snakes Dean... very nice ;)
So how about carpets, they stay quite small. When are you going to start on them...LOL
MIKE
Thanks Mike. I like carpets, but they're probably not in my future either. I think I'm just about done. In fact, I really need to go the other way and sell off some stuff. :(

Yeah, the difference between "wild caught" and "farm raised" is slight. Farm raised herps are basically animals that are born/hatched from contained w/c animals that are a wooden or plastic box away from being wild themselves. They're fed the same parasite-loaded prey that the wild ones eat. Oh well. I've never had to have a snake de-wormed, so your post was reassuring...

Sorry...
 Nah! They could have been from POOP ISLAND and I still would have wanted them. :grin01:

If I'm going to tempt you some more, it'll have to be with babies that I produce myself. ;) They had two rubber boas at the White Plains NY show that I attended last November, but they weren't a pair, so I resisted. I still kinda wish that I had picked up one for fun. They're easy.
