I hate news media!

they twist and scew everything, and I agree, I am more likely to fear a german shephard or chow being walked than a python.

Now if he was taking his mamba for a walk I'd think a little differently.

That makes my blood boil reading that buttttt...

I wouldn't want to say anything else... I'm in fear of putting myself in jeopardy of going to jail for hurting peoples precious ears.... lol. Jeez... what has this freakin' world come to??? :bang:

Well obviously was this just recent?? walking around with a snake on wrapped around you during winter especially in NY isn't bright. So yes, I see the cruelty to animals warrant.
Also, have you ever held a healthy 14 foot snake?? They are not light. That is probably a 100 plus pound animal. So yes, this is a dangerous animal and could pose a threat. Also, we do not know the laws and regulations for this area. Possibly it is against the law to own this species of snake with in the city or county limits or maybe a permit is needed and he did not have one.

I think there is more to the story than we know. If it was this past Tuesday, well the temp is 39 degrees in NY city.

So before we start posting flames against the police or media.. lets logically look at the article and read it.
Man Charged With Taking Python for a Walk on Highway

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

MASTIC, N.Y. — A man was arrested Tuesday for walking on a highway with a 14-foot python wrapped around his body, police said.

Curtis Dewberry, 35, of Wading River was spotted by an officer for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals while out strolling Tuesday afternoon, police in Long Island's Suffolk County said. The officer called police because the python is considered a danger to the public.

Dewberry has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to protect the public against dangerous wildlife. He was being held Tuesday and didn't have a lawyer.

I have to admit, I can see why the police would take it seriously.

He DID put the public in danger walking around with it, i mean im no expert but lets face it... A 14ft python could easily, If it wanted to, Overpower a lone man. Then your left with a very large, very heavy snake, quite likey angry or stressed roaming around the neighbourhood.

Oh yes, I can definitely say that it being that cold, is definitely cruel to the snake. I didn't realize that when I posted my reply. So yes, definitely is way too cold for a snake to be out in that.

As far as a threat to the public though, my rottweiler (God rest his soul, I had to put him down after last Christmas 9 years old) was a sweethart to the end, but definitely could've done alot of damage to anyone he came across but I was aloud to walk him down the street. Unless there was a law in the area saying that you couldn't do this with a big snake, I don't see the harm in carrying something like that around. That's just my opinion though... :)

Many people forget many large cities are making laws against owning large boids much like Florida state. This snake could have passed the cities limits by 6-8 feet as well. Some localities have a limit of 6 or 8 feet on snakes. I can also tell you St. Paul MN, you need a permit to own a corn snake.

I don't disagree that what he did was not astute. That said it sounds like he is being charged with more generic crimes (animal cruelty and failure to protect the public against dangerous wildlife) which would lead one to believe that they don't have a specific law regarding snake breeds or sizes.

Although I can easily see why you would not want a snake that size out in the general public in an uncontrolled setting, I would question whether a snake in 39 degree temps would be much more than seemly lifeless. I have little care for the misconstrued public and/or media opinions predicated on mostly false beliefs, other than it may lead to more strict laws aimed at saving the public.

What I would question is why a snake enthusiast would risk harming the animal by exposing it to those extreme conditions.

There was a 2ft python escaped in Belfast today and the local news phoned our 2nd pet store to ask one of our guys to go on TV and tell everyone how dangerous it was. His response was to tell them the most they would get would be a bite on the toe from something that small and it probably wouldn't get that far as it's only 4 degrees outside and it would die before it could "get" anyone!

I always cringe when people on this forum say they can't wait for their snake to get big enough to hang around their neck. So they can go to the pet shop or for a walk with it. I guess I don't find it impressive to scare people. While I agree many snake fears are irrational, but hey! I'm scared of snails. susang

Not just that, what if the store in question had herps with mites? You would be exposing your animal to that atmosphere.

Not just that, some snake hater could see you, freak out, and make a big stink. I don't even take mine outside for pictures any more and I am very careful who I allow inside the house as well. Not that it wouldn't be fun to answer the door with a big snake in hand when it's Jehovah's witnesses...

Wasn't it this past summer some little kid stomped on a retic at an animal show and killing it.

Wow what a story. I have taken our 8 mth old corn out front to get the mail. Sure hope no one calls the cops on me. Wouldn't want him to leap off my shoulders & attack the mailman...lol *only I think I'm funny..lol*

Its kinda funny you said that... I had my burm, Angel, out when they came calling once. She was only about 10 feet at the time so we were just hanging out watching tv and I never left her on her own so.... when they knocked, I yelled one minute, threw her over my shoulders and answered the door... well, they about screamed my ears off, backed off my deck and never came back :shrugs:

The story of the boy killing the snake has made me almost sick!, nevermind the fact the boy had no respect for a living being or didn't think TWICE about murdering it.........hes father didnt even offer the owner an apology!!!
