believe me, the white balance is allright. I took the picture without flash with a slow shutter speed to get the intensity of the colors. You can see that the head is a bit un-sharp (noisy). This picture however is taken with flash. But still you can see a bit how intense his colors are. In real he looks the best offcourse. The baby picture is a quick picture when he was in the transport box. That one has a big overexposure.

Just compare the two pictures and you'll easily recognize that the one of the newer picture is way more red than the bark on the older one. One of them is our of tune and, of course, its the one that makes the animal look more common. :)
 
Another great picture of woodchips

On the left a very nice ZigZag Okeetee. On the right my Abbotts. See the difference in color? No manipulation whatsoever.

Manipulation would mean by intention - thats I think I do not want to imply. But with the last picture showing the animal in, I think, correct WB, you proved your first picture out of tune again.
Just to say it again, the animal itself is amazing.

This last picture is made with flash. Flash makes the woodchips white. The flash also makes the Abbotts colors look dull like here.

When I make picture with slow shutter speed and without flash the colors of the snakes come out better. It also shows the true color of the bark:

We can move this discussion to the photography board, but the reason your flash makes the colors look "dull" is that the WB is almost correct when you use your flash, but it is out of tune of you don't. The last picture is out of tune again, making the animal more red of course, but the Wb is wrong. Sorry to say, but you can post the pic on a photo board and I'm absolutely sure people will tell you the same thing.
