This beautiful (and very cute) little girl, an Eastern Box Turtle, was rescued from a possible tragic fate.
My husband was nearing home, driving on US Rt. 27, when he spotted the turtle on the roadway. He turned the car around, and picked her up, worried that she would get run over (accidentally or on purpose).
The turtle was brought home.
She was in great shape and appeared to be very healthy.
Wasn't interested in eating anything but she did drink some water and, also, did a couple of rubs (using front feet), to her eyes/head, with the water. Afterwards, I did a little photo shoot, with her, before she was taken to the woods, at the back of our property, to be released.

Figured I'd share some photos of her.:)

I live in Boise now, but I grew up in Virginia. I miss box turtles so much! Thanks for the pics. They brought back good memories.

Awwww. Cute little thing. Last weekend there was a DOR painted turtle near my apartment. Even sadder was the fact that she was full of eggs (or at least she was before she got smashed). :(
 
Dean, some people will rescue those turtle eggs and incubate them. I hope your turt stays put- they don't relocate well. They have a very strong instinct to go home. Still- that's better than being smashed on the road!

I thought about it, but by the time I saw them, most of the eggs were smashed. And it was a hot day, so even the intact eggs had been obviously "cooking" for hours on the asphalt. There's really no shortage of these turtles where I live. The pond near me must have hundreds of adults in it (and it's not that big).

No, they don't relocate well. However, this turtle was found, on the road, no more than a 1/4 mile from where she was released (which was, also, on the same side, of the road, that she was headed in). It's not too far, from her usual "stomping grounds", and well away from the road/s. Hopefully, she will be well.
 
My boxies are enjoying wild blackberries for dinner every night. They are like a couple of starving dogs- I have to hide from them when I go out in the yard, or they chase me around. (They are well fed, but always think they need more!)
 
I'm a little afraid I might lose some toes if I am not careful. I bought raspberries today, I bet they'll love those!
 
funny I was just thinking of box turtles the other day. I would live em in the wild I just wanna see one! It has probally been 10 years since I have seen a wild reptile near my home!!! :(

That's a long time without seeing a wild reptile.

There are Box Turtles in PA. You might just have to go looking, somewhere away from your home, one of these days.:)

I see reptile out in the parks but as far as casually in my neighborhood and the woods by my house nothing! I used to at least see a rat snake.
