A different slant on the humble cornsnake

The Devils Advocate
Joel and I joined an Australian forum specialising in Australian snakes, well we love carpets don't we....So I have been posting pics of our morelia...They were a bit un fazed by them, seems they all got loads of really nice carpets.
But when they found out that we were from the UK, they asked for some other pics of what we keep.
I forgot that Australians can only keep Australian snakes... They went mad for what we think of as ordinary... So big up the corn or the boa, seems it's only ordinary if you can have them...... I just wanted to share that with you. We are special if you live somewhere else:cool:....LOL

Corns ARE something to be jealous of! To me they are simply the best breed! So many colors, and (generally speaking) calm and great eaters.

I've always had a special place in my heart for corns...(it was the first snake I ever wanted)... but in todays climate of ever diverse snakes, it's refreshing to take another look at *normal*

I've mulled getting other snakes, and I think that one day I may own a kingsnake (I've been eyeing a San Luis Potosi king because my boyfriend's family lives in/is from the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico :) ), but just one -- I'm definitely stuck on corns. They're easy to handle, safe to take to school for my young students, some are hardy enough to even be fed in school & make the trip home easily (I've never had a regurge as the result of feeding in school.). They're huge stars every year at ReptileFest in Chicago where thousands get to hold them & fall in love with them. :) Needless to say, I'm a big fan!

It is funny to think of people being in awe of our lovely corn snakes. It just seems funny to think that our most commonly kept snake would make such a stir somewhere else in the world.

It's been 2 years now since I've added any to my collection but I've had the "itch" recently to get another. Who knows maybe by years end I'll add another corn to my little collection.

I used to keep Jungle Carpet Pythons and was active on a morelia forum. I got in a correspondence with a guy from Australia who wanted husbandry info for a carpet python he caught in his front yard. I blows my mind to think of a carpet python in your yard.

To be completely honest, from personal experience with them, cornsnakes are my least favourite species of snake. I've never had good luck with them. They're pretty and they come in many colours but...meh. It's odd saying this on a cornsnake forum, but I've been thinking a lot lately and my opinion on many things has changed.
In my opinion, Ball Pythons ftw. Much, much, easier to handle, calmer and they come in many colours as well.
Oh, and I would LOVE to keep a carpet python... dunno why they'd be jealous of a cornsnake.. lol

Snake 1234 read the post below yours.... Thats why......Anything you can't have is special...
And Wade to find any snake in my back yard would be cool...But hey we got lizards that we don't look at twice...It's all relative...LOL

I've not seen that all! Just various shades of brown... where are the amels? the lavendars? the candy canes? The only thing I might be convinced to buy other than more corns would be a pied BP, but to do that I'd need to win a large Lotto :)

People will always covet what they can't have. I posted some shots of my lavender based corns on an Aussie morelia forum about a year ago, I swear there were 60 replies to my thread along the lines of "OMG IT'S PURPLE, THAT MUST HAVE COST YOU $7588476583"...

They wen't slightly nuts over a lowly snow corn aswell lol.

Ya, I've had the same experience (I joined looking for more spotted info)

To think they were so excited over an orange snake, and he was only $20 because his owners didn't want him anymore. I also think it's funny because here it's the opposite, we can't keep local species. Which sounds like a much better deal - I can live without rubbers and garters.

It puts it all into some kind of perspective doesn't it?....... Like some one from Eire or Nz finding a native snake.... LOL

Oh deffinatley. But they think womas and blackheads are common muck... you can't own a blackhead for less than £700 over here these days, and thats down from over £1000 last year!

I use two Australian sites to be honest.... The Carpets posted there are out of this world... Something really special IMO....There is no way you can compete with the stunning examples they take in their stride...And yet Sid is a storm... LOL
Post the GTP, Elle.... And wait for email meltdown....LOL

Thats another thing that beats me, the Aussies go wild for chondros yet they are soooo within reach!

My wee one wont arrive for another couple of weeks. It needs to warm up in Scotland a bit first. I don't want my precious wee Siren travelling in torrential rain! lol

Thats the thing with Australia...... Nothing is within reach.....The Cane Toad/rabbit put pay to that.... Total lock down...nothing goes in, nothing comes out (you guys in Florida etc. might want to take note)... Sad really as they are deprived of a lot of nice herps...And we are deprived of some nice snakes.....
Unless you got 1.2 Bredli... ;)

They're various shades of brown? What a silly comment! There ARE lavender ball pythons, there are "Dreamsicles" which are white and orange like candy canes. And there ARE amels (although they're called albinos). I can go on about all the different colours and morphs.
Check out NERDS website as well as Ralph Davis'.
You'll be surprised to see all the morphs.
