To cut or not to cut??

That is the question. I had a clutch of eggs get laid on April 23 which went on to hatch with no particular difficulties on June 22nd (60 days of waiting). Great clutch, got a variety of Motleys from it. Of the 13 eggs that were laid, 12 hatched and one stayed nice and plump . . . and quite large!! Well, it's July 10th now, which would put this one egg at 78 days. :shrugs: There's zero dimpling, zero smell, zero discoloration of note, but also zero hatchling! So, I'm getting antsy and want to slice this baby open. What say the rest of y'all?!

Have you candled it to see if there is any movement or veins?
Candling, schmandling!! If it wasn't fertile I think it would have rotted by now. Every clutch of eggs I've ever had the infertile eggs have caved in and stunk at about hatchling time. :shrugs: Honestly, I've never felt the need to ever candle my eggs, so the obvious never crossed my mind for this situation. Now where are the matches . . . and what side of the egg does the wick come out of . . . ;)

Okay, so I candled the durn thing. There are veins, but to my surprise the dark shape of snake which I assumed would cover a majority of the inside of the egg only covers about a third. Now I'm really curious. I think it may be slice and dice time . . . but I'll wait until tomorrow to see what others might have to say. :shrugs:

Well I don't bother with the matches or working out where the wick is, I just use a fine beam L.E.D torch :p

You type too quick ;)

I've found when using the torch close to hatching time, I'm not obsessive though, that the hatchling doesn't fill as much of the egg as I would expect, more like 1/3 to 1/2. Only when it's very close does it seem to "fill up", so I'm not sure what I would do :shrugs:

Keep us posted whatever you decide :)

. . . so you're trying to tell me a torch would be better than a candle?!? Aren't torches greasy and oily and lots of black smoke? Not sure the wife would approve of that in the house! :poke:

Brent, you know darn well what I meant :nyah: and I wouldn't dream of suggesting something you would get in trouble with the Mrs for ;)

In the words of my Field Biology students, "someone needs to take a chill pill." Simmah-da-nah would ya?!

I think you should just cut them all...

Wow, you know, I really don't even know what you mean by any of that.
A. If you can't tell the difference between friendly banter amongst friends and defending a friend in a completely different thread then you have your own problems that I can't help you with.
B. I'm asking about one egg, so not sure how I'm supposed to cut them all. Unless you're insinuating that I should just cut all my eggs open thus killing my hatchlings . . . well, then you've proven your ability to be a rude SOB and lost any second or third chances as far as I'm concerned. Clarify if you wish, but quite honestly I don't really care at this point.

Yeah that really cleared things up AND explained what your comments meant. Good job!! You're a real winner. Now have anything constructive to add? Nope, good, next thread.

Have a nice day.

I'm not sure whether I'd cut or not. If it's still plump and not 'sweating', maybe it's just a very late developer? Cutting could cause it to die if it's healthy but not ready yet.........good luck with it though

I wouldn't but I'm not telling you not to.
I assume Torch is Flashlight? Not to be confused with those things the angry villagers have along with the pitchforks... LOL you learn something new every day!

Umm yep, a torch over here, is what you guys call a flashlight...lol...sorry for the confusion

That's part of the deal that's got me hemming and hawing.

Yes, torch = flashlight, and Suzy knew that I knew torch = flashlight. :p

Thanks for the comments both of you. Get enough of those and maybe I will hold off cutting . . . but for how long!??!

PS.
...sorry for the confusion
There was no confusion!! :D

I usually wait about 3 days after the others have hatched, and then I put a small slit in it, and leave it a day or so. If nothing moves or comes out then I get invasive, but usually the little fellas peek out on their own. I guess I'm just paranoid though, because I used to find a lot of drowned stragglers. It also helps to slit because I can see color of Fluid, if cloudy it usually is dead :awcrap:

I usually do the same thing. I've never had a live hatchling at that point in the game (3 days after). I also don't cut eggs to help them hatch. I figure if they can't get out of the egg what other problems will I have?! :shrugs: My cutting of eggs is usually to see whats inside and why they didn't hatch . . . that's the point I'm getting to with this one. Thanks for the input, it's appreciated! :)

I knew you knew, but also knew others may not know what you know :p ;)

PS, don't worry I haven't lost it, well not yet :D

You are very welcome :) It's crazy how deformed some of those poor dead critters can be:cry:
No doubt there! I've seen some things too! Some get their pictures taken, others get shuffled quickly off to the trash in case my wife thinks I'm running weird genetic experiments . . . okay, not really, but it feels that way sometimes!
