Maverick of the bloodred clutch!!!

I awoke this morning to Kristi coming running and yelling from the front of the house to the bedroom, "Stephanie!!!!!! One of the snakes hatched!!!!!!" Apparently she'd had dreams about snakes last night and had a feeling that they had started, opened up the ziploc (which is serving as a hole-punched lid of a rubbermaid I have no lid for), moved the paper towel, and one tiny one is two thirds of the way out. It's just hanging out here so far, and no one else has even slit his or her egg, so hopefully it's hanging out absorbing the rest of its yolk. It wasn't slit yesterday early evening when I last checked on them. Man, they are TINY at first! I always forget! I think maybe this one is especially tiny, and I think this is going to be a clutch of relatively small snakes.

This is the first result of a hypo blood x bloodred cross. Can I call them proven now?

Congrats....and Yes, you can call them proven now :)

Also, I may be wrong on this one, but don't the hypo bloods have white heads. Could it be that the female is het hypo? Wouldn't that be cool.:crazy02:

Ahh, I guess I should have written it bloodred x hypo blood cross. (Must remember that the males are mentioned first, must remember that the males are mentioned first, must remember that the males are mentioned first . . . ;)) Kathy Love didn't think dad was very likely to be het hypo when I bought him, but this clutch should tell me for sure.

I, too, thought this one looked a little hypo-ish, but there's only one, and I've never hatched out bloodreds before, so what do I know? Plus I imagine it could darken up some; if this one hatched out early, maybe it's just pale. I figure time and a bunch more hatchlings (to compare to) will make it clear. Whohoo!

Congrats Steph! Such a sweet looking hatchling! I still have weeks left before my Bloods start to pip... Thanks for making the wait that much longer, lol.... :D

Wouldn't that be cool to find out there was a hypo gene hiding out? i found a few hidden genes a few years ago when a friend sent some snakes that he couldn't remember what they wer het for. I had a nice Bloodred looking female w/ belly pattern, but he thought it was het for something else, so I put her w/ my male charcoal / het hypo pewter, and found half of the clutch was bloodred. Sometimes ya just gotta go crazy and experiment! Congrats on the hatchling BTW!

Congrats on the first of the hatchlings! I'd almost say Hypo on that one, but would prefer to wait and see it compared to clutchmates. I just had the pleasure of hatching out my first set of Hypo's and they are dramatically different from their "regular" Bloodred clutchmates! Wouldn't be a long shot to find out he was Hypo coming from Kathy. I apparently have a female that's het Hypo (from Kathy) though I can't confirm it as the person that had hatchlings from her never officially has said anything to me about it. :shrugs: Guess I'll have to find a way to test breed her now.

Congrats on yours, it's a great time!. Didn't quite understand the ziploc/cover/holes thing, but hopefully they're secure in there!

LOL! They're fine. I used an un-paired rubbermaid as an incubation container. It didn't have its partner (a lid). So to seal it to provide high humidity, I put it inside a large zip-loc bag. When the eggs started denting, I poked fork-holes in the zip-loc so that any new hatchlings would have fresh air. Now, though, I've put the un-lidded rubbermaid inside a bigger tub with a lid and airholes.

This would be an example of one of those times Kristi would say I put too much unnecessary detail in my story . . . I guess I never needed to mention the zip-loc in the first place. :D

Beautiful hatchling! Congrats! Please post a photo of the whole clutch together so we can see the differences. And as for the ziplock info, just tell Kristi that sometimes unnecessary details are just as interesting as the main plot.;)

Ha! Oh no, Brent. I wouldn't be such an idiot this far along in the game as to lose 16 newborn hatchlings in my house. Furthermore, if something crazy happened and I WERE such an idiot to lose 16 newborn hatchlings in my house, I DEFINITELY wouldn't be idiot enough to spread that knowledge around . . . ;)

My 1st thought when I saw the pic was the same as others have mentioned, "I wonder if they're both het hypo cause that baby looks hypo".

Hopefully we sent enough positive karma your way!!! Looking forward to the rest of the group.

Great clutch Stephanie. That guy/gal looks quite Hypoish to me as well and that "baldy" head is great. Nice baby. Congrats.

Does it count if you have lost 16 snakes in your house, just not all at once? :shrugs: :grin01: :sidestep:
Jay

That's one adorable hatchling. My first thought was a hypo blood too but once we get to see pics of the rest of the clutch it should be apparent if it is or not. Still a cute little guy either way.
