9/11

I was at work, normal workday.
I walked into the shop from the office and a co-worker was walking toward me, he said;"A plane just hit one of the towers in NY". I thought for a few seconds and said to him; "I don't really think that would happen by accident". I had a picture of some nut with a grudge in a small plane. Went back to work, 30 minutes later the same co-worker came to me and said; "They hit the other tower too, another plane".
We were listening for news while working and heard about the Pentagon hit. We weren't sure when it would stop. The phones in the area were off except for emergency services, so we couldn't call family.
A few hours later some workers (I believe from the Parks Department) came to get some light towers from us to take to the Pentagon for later that night to light the crash site. One of the men said that they were working near the Potomac River and he saw the plane, he mentioned to the other workers how odd it was that it was going that way and not towards the runways at National Airport, then their radio went crazy with calls.
Of course when I went home I watched the events I had only heard pieces of all day, the amazing "magic act" of the planes disappearing into the buildings, then later the chilling disappearance of the buildings themselves.

I was awoken by a phone call in the early hours from Jenn.. She told me what had happend.. I was in absolute disbelief.. I pulled on some day clithes and sat in front of the TV, then the second tower started to collapse and I was in absolute dismay..

Bless the Souls of those who perished, and pray we may never see it happen again...

Regards.. Tim of T and J

i was in school. our entire school shut down, and they would move everyone to a class with a TV and we all watched the news for the rest of the day. we obviously ate lunch but then it was back to watching the TV. it took me a little bit because i think i was in 7th or 6th grade, but i realized how serious it was because all of my teachers were watching in disbelief. when i saw that i started paying more attention and realized how important/devastating it was.

I was leaving for work... my mother inlaw called me and said... you need to turn on the TV... I did... had to teach a bunch of students ... we talked... watched... talked.

Today... I showed some of the news that I recorded on that day... then I showed an information video on Bin Laden... my Sophomores and Juniors were in 3rd and 4th grade when it happened... they needed a refresher.

I was in 5th grade. I was home sick with this wicked flu, sitting on the couch, curled up with my blanket. I was flipping through the channels when I came across the news that the first plane hit. I sat on the couch all day watching the whole thing happen live.

I was in fourth grade and in the computer lab. The computer teacher must have gotten a phone call or e-mail because as we were lines up to leave, he turned on the news and there it was. None of us really understood it but the teacher let us watch for a few minutes but then we carried on with the day.

That was a very sad day...

Well, I was in 1st grade (in PL) and I was getting ready to go to sleep... Yeah, it was shocking but especially because I was supposed to go there in a couple of weeks!

When I went to school next morning everything was pretty normal. The teachers spoke to us about it, and all the kids were talking about but we didn't make a big deal out of it.

I was at work when it happened. I was living near Pittsburgh at the time, so everyone was really freaked out about Flight 93 which crashed about 80 miles East of us. They made all the kids leave school to go home. So half our staff was gone from noon on to pick up their kids. No one really worked all day, we just kept listening to the radio and trying to get on the internet, but it was so slow because of all the traffic.

It's kind of weird, but I was "on-line dating" a guy from Israel at the time and at first someone was blaming the attacks on the Israeli's, so I was worried about him. I remember calling him and talking to him about it.

The other major event I remember was the Oklahoma City bombing. I was in 9th grade English when that happened.

I was Installing Carpet in a family's basement. I remember walking by the tv and seeing clips of the planes. I walked out side to my truck. I looked over at the Nuclear power plant near by. I thought to myself. I better hurry up and get done. I didn't see or hear about the other crashes till later in the day. On the way home. I had a talk radio station on. I remember the silence in the air. I have a small airport nearby and an Air force base. I usually see Warthogs flying their routes over my house but not then. I was very Sad and Angered at the same time. Those poor people and the Brave souls who rush in to help. God bless them and their Families. I still feel the same way to those that caused this. :devil01: Karma is a **itch. They will get theirs.

I was in seventh grade in a history class. I didn't even know what had happened until I had walked to the high school to my mom's office, and another history teacher was talking to her about it. I don't remember anything but being angry... Especially when I heard about the plane that tried to fight back, and people calling their families to say they love them... Just thinking about that now is making me cry.

I was at home.....

cooking breakfast for my mother and brother who were visiting me. She came in and told me a plane had hit the WTC. I thought what kind of moron could hit the WTC. Like many, my first thought was a small prop plane.
I woke my brother up and he was pissed. It was all I could do to keep him, and these are his words, "... going down to the 7-11 and push em around some." When the first tower fell he was total denial for a few minutes.
I went to NYC three days later to help relieve over worked LEO. The first thing they do is to take you to ground zero. I will never forget that. Four stories of debris, the smell of burning jet fuel, paper, and yes, human remains. People, even with gloves, losing fingers trying to pick up glass, your shoes (and rescue dog shoes) melting. And still some distant chirping of locators.
My intent was not to upset anyone here, just please ladies and gentlemen, don't forget.

i was in 4th grade and my friends mom had picked us up and took us home around 1:00 and she had us watch the news. i didnt really understand it back then but it scares me when ever i hear about something with a plane and the sucurity to get on a plane now is just horrible

I was in 8th grade and had just walked into my English. My teacher was hysterical crying and screaming her son in law and grandson were in the first building to get hit after the second plane hit she passed out. Needless to say for the rest of the day everyone walked around like a zombie. I was terrified because my dad was in the army part of a medivac unit and I could here the helicopters leaving. They let a lot of students go home and in all the classes we just set and stared at the TV. in shock. I don’t know if her son in law and grandson made it for certain but I don’t think they did cause she never came back to school.

A refresher course, what a good thing you did.
Pres. Bush said there will come a time when people (who were too young) will not know what happened on 9/11. It is up to us to remind them and to make sure a tragedy like that does not happen again.

It's funny my daughter asked me this same question yesterday. We lived in Chesapeake Va not to far from Norfolk Naval base. I was at home all excited that my husband and I were going to an Aerosmith concert that night. My husband was suppose to be on a plane that day but he worked out with his boss to leave on Monday so he could take me to the concert. He had just left for work and I turned on Good Morning America and they were just talking about how the first plane had hit the tower and how this had to be some kind of an accident. Everyone was scrambling to get information. Then the 2nd plane hit and I think them we all knew something was terribley wrong. My husband called me and asked me what was going on. Then my Aunt called who lived near by and we just kind of sat on the phone together in silence and then the plane hit the pentagon. We kept wondering who was doing this and why and how many more were there. I dont think I ever left a tv on all day but that day. I just couldnt believe what I was seeing.

Other dates I can remember...

The Columbine HS shootings. I was a senior in HS and I remember thinking to myself... why would kids shoot their classmates? How could they hate so much? Are there people at my school who hate me and my friends so much that they could shoot us and kill us for no reason??

Then Virginia Tech got shot up, and while I had already graduated, I still had friends there and two people I had known in school were killed. I realized that the answer to my question in 1999 is an emphatic yes. Sadly.

There are many, many days that I wish I didn't have to remember these days... but only by remembering them can we keep them from happening again.

That's one of the main reasons I started this thread. I don't want anyone to forget where they were.
Thank you all for making this such a great memorial thread.

Where were you during the World Trade Center attacks 7 years ago?

I was in my 8th grade world history class. Our teacher stopped everything, turned on the TV, and said "Remember this, guys. This is going to be in the history books."

I, too was in 8th grade. However, I was skipping school that day! I'm glad I did. I got to watch the coverage all day. It was quite astounding and just plain terrifying.

I don't want this to sound arrogant, but what about other bad things that happened in history? Why don't we have "memorial threads" for them? Things like the Tsunami, Aberfan, 7/7 bombings, and most of all WWII and soooo much more. What happened to those tragedies? I mean, in WWII 50-70 MILLION people died, in the Tsunami 300,000 people... yet no one really cares anymore, it seems.

I'm late on this...But...

I was in my Senior year Economics class and the teacher had it on the TV. Just the day before we were talking in the class about disasters and how it effects the economy...It took us all a while to realize it was for real and not just her trying to dramatize her lesson...
