Cats and carpet?

Well my sister advised me she wants me to move out of my current bedroom and into another one down the hall. The problem? It's ALL carpet.. and why is that a concern? MY cats are the issue. When I brought them downstairs into a carpeted area they started scratching at it like a cat post. Now I do have a cat post but it's kind of small.

My store is having a sale on large cat trees and I plan on picking up as many as I can without breaking my wallet.

My sister will murder me if they do any sort of damage to my new bedroom. I've currently got wood floors in the old room and it's awesome.It has a walk in closet(which I will miss for sure!)

The new room is definitely larger and I have no problems with that..

Any suggestions on how to get the gets to scratch the cat posts and NOT the carpet?

I'll probably be moving into the larger room when I get my tax money in/get paid. I've always had wood floors with my cats so I just want to make sure everything is prepared in the new room..

Thanks for any good suggestions.. My manager advised me to use catnip on the cat trees. Sounds like a good idea. Any others?
 
I found if you watch where they like to scratch the most and put the post there that is the best. This has worked the best with my cats but my cats are quite good and never really scratch that much anyway and they could care less about catnip so that never worked for me. I also found keeping their nails trimmed helps too. Good luck.

I trim their nails pretty often. I've been doing that since they were kittens and they still hate me for it. If I don't do it the nails get long and hooky. Both kitties are nearly a year old now and have lived in the wood floor room(mine) since they were babies. Hopefully the transition to the other room won't throw them off too badly and they will get used to it.

I don't plan on moving rooms until I get the cat trees in there. Hopefully I get my tax money soon!
 
My two cats have never torn at the carpet unless I accidently lock them in my room and they want out. I think if you have scratching posts for them and maybe try spray catnip to get the excited about the posts you will be fine. I know my male cat LOVES his spray nip, but has nothing to do with dried leaves.

You could also try the claw-covers, at least at first, until you figure out where they WANT to scratch and try to fix it.

That way, no damage, and you have 4-6 weeks to get them scratching the right things!
 
I have multiple cat posts, though my cats will sometimes scratch carpet but it's very rare. With the catpost make sure it is not a carpet scratch post, as this will just tell them it is ok to scratch carpet. I use sisal. And make sure it is a tall post, most of mine are about 2.5-3 feet tall. I have a cat tree from wal mart that goes floor to ceiling, and I bought sisal and wrapped it around the post to make that one giant scratch post, with platforms.
