Meet Scout

Scout played 'disappearing up the pyjama sleeve' before eating 2 pinks tonight

I found a freshly shed little snakey last night before I went to work. Today Scout was not in the mood for posing and wanted to escape from the blue bowl!

Hi,

Scout is a very beautiful snake! But can anybody explain me what a kink is? Is it a disease or a disability? Or something else?

Scout has a deformity to her spine. a noticable misalignment. You can both see and feel that her vertebrae are out of place about 2/3 of the way down her length. I'm not sure if this is due to the incubation problems that killed the whole of my clutches in their eggs except her, or if it's a genetic problem.

Here's Scout in a bit of a grumpy mood tonight. She wanted her pinkies more than she wanted to pose.

Scout is beautiful, and only getting more so. I am so glad she has a forever home with you. Are you going to try the pairing again that produced her? Maybe in 2010 they won't all be DIE.

Thanks Fred. I do love my special snakey.

I'm hoping it was the incubation that caused the problems, which is why I've bought a huge winecooler incubator from a woma breeder. But, I'm off to Arizona on holiday next Sept, so if none of the snakes hook up early I'll have to miss out breeding this year, I'll be on a bit of a tight time schedule otherwise. I wouldn't be happy risking going off on holiday without eggs laid , incubated and hatched.

Scout seemed to be doing well, she'd reached the grand size of 35g, shedding perfectly, no regurges. I had her out for exercise on my bed so she got the chance to stretch and develop, but yesterday I found her dead in her tub. I'd been talking to her 2 hours before, telling her she had to wait for her food, went to feed her first out of the babies and she was dead.
She's buried under my roseush. I didn't know if she'd have a normal lifespan, but this has come as a shock. RIP Scout, my fiesty little girl.

I'm so sorry to hear Scout's passed away.... :(

In Finland we've faced three some what similar cases this year. The small yearlings (one was a '08) have been eating well, pooping, shedding normally and not regurging. And what's interesting too: even though they've been feeding regularly they haven't been growing as supposed to. Then suddenly they've either refused a couple of times or regurged once or twice (not in a row though) and then found dead.

We've had one go through an autopsy and nothing significant was found: it had basically no fat tissue in it's body, rectum and guts were empty (but there was a half digested mouse in stomach) and there was increased growth of (normal) bacteria in the intestines.

Our conclution is that for some reason these poor fellows were suffering from some sort of defect which is why nutritions of the food weren't absorbed. That's why they didn't grow even though they ate well, that's why their immune system wasn't working and allowed the bacteria grow and spread uncontrolled - and that's why they died.

What caused the odd defect? Maybe it was bad luck, maybe too much inbreeding. Who knows... :shrugs:

I'm so sorry to hear that she passed. It's always hard to deal with, especially with no explanation and no warning. :( R.I.P.
