It is true that English is taught in most countries however don't forget English students who have never lived in an English speaking country are nowhere close to being fluent. You gotta live in a country to learn its language. Be it English, Dutch, French or Italian. School English can hardly be considered English. There is so many different accents, slangs, etc. I know lots of people that had German in school, ask them what they remember and most can just about tell me what their name is and where they'refrom It's impossible to learn a language fluently in just a school alone, I would say the best you can do is learn the basics. Watching English movies and reading lots of books would help tho, but unfortunately they dubb EVERYTHING here!!!! I don't even watch German TV anymore just stream everything I wanna watch online.

Just seen your comment on Carpe Serpentis's wall you are quite right there, Englisch ain't a widely spoken language in German/Austria. Well young people do speak it a little, but unless they leave to live in an English speaking country they only know the English they are taught in school. Another thing is tho there is a lot of tourism where I come from and loads of esp. English people expect us to speak English fluently. Why is that? They are holidaying in our country. Can we expect them to speak German when we are in the UK? No! But I have to say that most Dutch people do speak good English AND German I can not speak Dutch but understand a little..

Thanks for stating the obvious. Seeing that your from the Netherlands makes me wish I was back there myself. I visited the local flower shops in Amsterdam and the like of course a few times while I was there. For me, the biggest shock was seeing that so many spoke so many languages fluently in Europe. Everywhere I went, it was just amazing to me from an American point of view where most are barely bilingual at best.
